short version: america’s first—and only—chess world champion has passed away in reykjavik, according to his spokesman. fischer was 64, no cause of death given. long version here.

commentary: it’s a shame that his brilliant play was seemingly overshadowed by his well-known anti-semitism and tantrums. tales of his brilliant he was at chess make me wish i understood the game better, to be honest, but i have at best a very rudimentary knowledge of the game, myself.

God bless  him. Seems like so many chess champions are strange. He always had friends here in Iceland and was popular here. He was a loner of course.,
The newspaper here says that he was in hospital in Reykjavík in October and November and since then at home.

Chess is my favorite boardgame.  I even go online and play against the computer.   It is very stimulating, and brings such a sense of satisfaction as you play, clear till the game is over.  And then, all you want to do is clear the board and start all over again.

I followed Bobby fisher ever since he played that famous tennis match with Billy Jean King.

A great loss to be sure.  While his personality might have seemed strange to others it was his mind that should have been the focus.  I greatly admire anyone with the patience and logic to play chess well, and he was one of the chess playing icons.

Ed- Chess is not a board game to pull out once in a while amongst a group of others unless your opponent is a incompetent as you are.

In order to be competitive with a decent amateur takes a measure of devotion, but is well worth the effort if you enjoy the game. Since there is little chance or luck in chess, I have found it unpleasurable unless the players are close in ability, understanding, and expertise at the game.

Learning with an advanced player takes time and a teacher with patients.
