so it's friday and before i lurch into yet another day of data conversion, infernal reminded me about a story i briefly described in one of moon's blog entries: the experience of licking champagne off a frozen lake.
back in college, i became fast friends w/ a bunch of guys who gamed (meaning RPGs, not computer games). one of them, g, his parents had a place in the poconos and apparently, it was tradition in that circle to go to the poconos every new year's eve, get hammered and sleep it off.
i should point out that g is the same guy who had a friend that used his USMC saber to strike off the hand of a would-be mugger on the train. i think i told that story once upon a time, but i digress...
anyway, it was a bit of a drive but finally, i made my way out to the poconos. i dressed appropriately for the weather, all that good stuff, and came armed with booze, supplied by my older sister. :>
now, it tends to be pretty cool (temperature-wise) in the poconos. the cabin is sitting right on a small lake (or large pond, i'm not sure) which froze over--something it does every winter evidently.
g has spent many a day on that frozen lake so he knew it would be safe. so at around 11:30 that night, someone got the inspiration (obviously, alcohol-fueled) that rather than drinking the champagne at midnight, we should pour it on the frozen lake and drink it from that.
well, five minutes later everybody was bundled up and making the quick stroll to the water's (or rather, ice's) edge.
after some brief discussion of whether or not we were gonna re-create a scene from movie history by licking a frozen lake, we concluded that wouldn't be an issue. again, i suspect the influence of alcohol, but that's neither here nor there...
well, midnight came, the sparkling wine (i know, i said champagne but we were college students who couldn't afford to cough up for the french stuff) was popped and we lapped it up off the lake.
it was surreal, and apart from being a bit colder than drinking from a flute, it was OK. i'm not sure whether it would be something i wanna do again, considering how cold it needs to be to re-create it, though. :>
