More than seven million patients have been unable to see an NHS dentist for almost two years.

Most of those denied access have paid for private care instead, says Citizens Advice.

But almost three million have gone without treatment altogether, claims the charity.

The figure includes thousands of children and is much higher than Government estimates.

that's a much smaller number than the people in the US who can't see a dentist because they have no insurance and can't afford it. Surely d6, if you want to argue that the good of a system is based on the number of people that don't go without care america is the worst of the industrialized countries.

I'm amazed you didn't think of this before you made this post.

I always like how people cut and paste sensational sections of reports and claim them as fact, read the article, the survey was based on 1800 people, last time I checked ( Today) the population of the UK was 60,776,238 to extrapalate these numbers from this little amount of data is misleading in the worst way.

I would also bet that the numbers in the US are similar and money while probably a main reason is not the only reason.

While universal HC is not for everyone, it sure as hell beats nothing, also note the "survey" failed to indicate how many people did get care.

I always like how people don't read the source article clearly and then go off half cocked and respond like cussane did....re-read it.....they polled 1800 out of the 7 million....there is still 7 million with a problem....the problem is socialized medicine!
    More to follow.....I'm sure.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 18, 2008....
d6, do you actually know thing one about statistics? cussane is absolutely right, a poll size of 1800 is statistically useless.

"I always like how people don't read the source article clearly and then go off half cocked"

Are you talking about yourself d6?
  • Cussane said on Jan 18, 2008....
Again, read the whole article, it says findings "suggest" 7 million based on the 1800 surveyed and it also says one of the reasons for not going to a dentist is not requring care. D6fer you seem to have an issue with socialized medicine, I can you from living, working in the US, Canada, South America and Europe that any country worth it's salt tales care of thier own people and not providing some form of basic health care to your citizens is a reciepe for failure. Just a side note but the Economist Report for 2006 that lists the top 10 countries to live in all have some form of socialized medicine, the 2007 UN report for the top 25 cities to live in all are in countries that have a socialized medical program...hmmmmm maybe there is something to it Cussane
  • D6fer said on Jan 18, 2008....
Cussane....I have a problem with socialism in general....not just socialized medicine...the U.N. report? ha! socialists trying to push their own agenda......btw ...we have some form of basic healthcare here....thats why the illegal aliens are bankrupting our system.....those of us that do pay for their health care are footing the bill for them.

  • bloc said on Jan 19, 2008....
can you tell me what percentage of our budget goes to healthcare for illegal aliens? I can assure you it's less than 1% so your phantom boogeyman is just that, a phantom.
  • Cussane said on Jan 19, 2008....
D6fer, even if you exclude the UN report, thier are still over 43 economist's report, 11 WHO reports that clearly state the basis of a successful society is some form of universal health care. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the US system of medicare and medicaid based on income and ability to pay and age, so what about working class families. I can tell you from my experience, I pay about 12 times more as an employer for a comparable level of health care for my US employees than I do for my Canadian employees, and my US employees still pay co-payments of anywhere from 800-1200 per month depending on family size and previuos health history. My Canadian plants pay 2.1% of there payroll as a health care tax and the employees pay a max of 900 per year again depending on family size and income So where is the down side ????? Cussane
  • bloc said on Jan 19, 2008....
cussane hit the nail on it's head. We pay far more for our healthcare and we get less. This is an enormous burden on our society and on our companies. I'm in management as well and I can state for a fact that healthcare costs are a giant road block slowing down new entrepreneurs.
  • D6fer said on Jan 19, 2008....
I don't care how many reports or reporters say that that is the benchmark for success....it doesn't work....socialism doesn't work....communism doesn't work....I will have a piece out soon on pioneer economics 101.....I'll explain in depth there....I'm sure you will enjoy ripping it to pieces!
  • bloc said on Jan 19, 2008....
universal healthcare doesn't make a country communist. This idea that countries ahve to be one extreme or the other is simply naive.

Canada, France, Germany, etc are doing just fine. They have universal healthcare as wel.
  • Cussane said on Jan 19, 2008....
Well, i guess we can ignore the factsjust because we dont like were they came from, yep lots of logic there. So tell me D6fer are the UK, Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Columbia, Austriala, New Zealand, Scotland, France, Bermruda and the like socialist because they all have some form of universal health care. Or are you just trying to change the topic from HC to government seeing as your original post on the NHS has been refuted, and yes if it is inaccurate, untrue, wrong or misleading I will enjoy ripping it to pieces Cussane
  • D6fer said on Jan 20, 2008....
universal HC is socialism, and it does not work.....and you refuted nothing.
  • bloc said on Jan 20, 2008....
it's working just fine in other countries so a simple observation would show that your statement is nonsense.
  • D6fer said on Jan 20, 2008....
waiting and dieing is not working.
  • bloc said on Jan 20, 2008....
more people wait and die here. I think you are forgetting about the millions that don't have any insurance. We also have things like this where an insurance company refused to cover treatment and someone dies.

I am unsure why you are unable to make an honest argument d6. Surely someone that points out people waiting for care in other countries would ask themselves how that compares to our country. You don't, you simply take a small piece of information and make false claims based on it.
  • D6fer said on Jan 20, 2008....
bloc......there are situations worldwide that are unfair....where people fall through the cracks etc....the millions that dont have insurance here can go get treatment....you make it sound like we have millions of people dieing in their homes because they cant get emergency treatment....that is bullshit and you know it.

  • bloc said on Jan 20, 2008....
so if we are paying for their treatment already why not go with universal care. It's widely accepted that preventive care is cheaper than waiting until people show up at an emergency room.

The other reasons for universal care still exist.
    1. healthcare is a huge burden on our businesses especially small businesses
    2. our system is far more expensive than the others
    3. the leading cause of bankruptcies in america our healthcare bills.

If we are going to pay for it in the form of emergency rooms why not do it in a better way?
  • D6fer said on Jan 20, 2008....
because when you make it "free" then it gets abused....drives up costs....makes longer lines.
  • bloc said on Jan 20, 2008....
then why are costs lower in other countries that have universal care?
  • D6fer said on Jan 20, 2008....
    costs? to who exactly?
  • bloc said on Jan 20, 2008....
everyone. Other countries pay far less per person than we do on healthcare. Their system costs less as a whole.
  • D6fer said on Jan 29, 2008....
    oh look! heres more!
