handfasting invitation revised.jpg

Well, the count down is getting short!  I just wanted to let my SoulCast family know that I have so appreciated your advice, open ears, etc. as I have been dealing with this wedding planning stuff.  It would be my pleasure to have each and every one of you there when I "tie the knot" literally.  So, in that spirit I have posted an invitation for you all. (I designed these and put them together myself)

I just rescheduled the cake tasting for this weekend and will order it after the tasting.  Yummy!!!  Still working on sweet talking our choice of officiant back into doing the ceremony as well as rewriting the ceremony to better suit Bill and I.

No dress in sight yet!  I'm on the edge of sheer panic about that, but not quite over the edge.  I am considering a 30's style gown now after seeing just what it was that my recently deceased gramma wore on her special day.  I also have just found another Irish custom where the bride carrys a handkerchief down the aisle as part of her bouquet "for tears of the bride" so I will be shopping for that this week.  There is more to the tradition, but I will save that for another blog.

The spoon will be sent out next week, so hopefully no worries there.  I need to talk to my sis and get the champagne ordered.  Can you believe I will be able to buy Schramsberg Champagne for $20 a bottle!!!?  I will also be working on wedding favors.  I'd like to buy these beautiful tins of tea that are actually called wedding tea.  It smells wonderful.

Believe it or not, this "go time" planning puts me in a much better mood than the long term stuff. :)

  • the_infernal_optimist said on Jan 15, 2008....
I will definitely be there in spirit, and would gladly go in person if I could! :) I'm so excited for you, u-i! It's getting so close!

The 30s-style dress sounds like a beautiful idea to me. :)

    what a handsome invitation, u-i! :>

    holy crap, schramsberg for $20/bottle?!

    [jaw drops to floor]
  • polarheart said on Jan 15, 2008....
U-I, here are some 30ies style wedding dresses. . .which style do you like best (if any) so we know what to look for.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 15, 2008....
Polar - You have no idea how silly I grinned when I read that you will write the date in your diary.  Yes, I need help with the dress.

TIO - Well, if you find yourself at loose ends in CA around that time........  Yes, the 30's dress would also be kind to my curvy figure.

SW - Thank you, they have all the "little touches" that I wanted included.  Yes, the champagne is a steal!  Unfortunately the restaurant wants another $20 for a corkage fee, so it will end up at full price after all.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 15, 2008....
Polar - this one would be perfect if it was in my size.  The price is completely out of the question, but maybe I could print the picture out and see if I can find a similar dress.  Thank you for finding that!
  • polarheart said on Jan 15, 2008....
You're welcome. I will keep that style in mind and see if I can find something similar. . .I actually didnt see the price till now!!  I just wrote your wedding date into my diary :-)) (you can GRIN again!)
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Jan 15, 2008....
Do you know any seamstresses, u-i? Sometimes they can replicate things at a fraction of the cost, but I'm not sure how long it would take to make a dress like that. It's very pretty!

Oh how sweet of you to think of us.
  • Sunshine_Mariah said on Jan 15, 2008....
Ohh uniquely... that is the one I liked out of the bunch too! :-) It's too bad I didn't know sooner... I can sew, really well! :-( I best not say anymore and get you all disappointed... but I do think if you took that picture to a seamstress, they'd be able to help out greatly! It doesn't seem too hard of a design at all! :-) Best of luck... I'll be with you in spirit on your wedding day.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 15, 2008....
Polar - You know I did grin again!

TIO  - The only seamstress I know is an aunt of mine that doesn't talk to me.  Then there is the time thing, which I'm pretty sure would be very close if not impossible.  But I have seen some dresses sorta like this, so if I found one that was close, it might be possible to have it tailored a little.

skald - Well, some of you are nearly like family.  (without the fighting and stuff)

SM - so now I'll know who to call for my anniversary dress ;)  (I have no idea if there is such a thing, but it's worth a try!)
  • Sunshine_Mariah said on Jan 15, 2008....
Absolutely! :-) You can call me... I'll whip you up something sexy! ;-)
  • Sunshine_Mariah said on Jan 15, 2008....
Oh yea... I had a question about the love spoon. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere (maybe I missed it), but is there like a tradition or story or something behind this. It looks beautiful by the way! :-) I absolutely love the love spoon! :-)
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 15, 2008....
SM - You know I will call!!  Here's a link to the original post about the spoon.  It talks about the tradition behind the spoons and shows the original sketch I sent to the spoon carver.
  • Sunshine_Mariah said on Jan 15, 2008....
Thanks for the link! :-) What a neat idea!

I love the invitations, very pretty. Good luck with the dress and the cake tasting, I'm sure it will go brilliantly.

Shaken - (Hmmm, I always want to add "not stirred" to your name)  Thank you, and yes, I hope things go smoothly too.  What language is that last line in. Tagolag?

Bright Blessings!  How wonderful.  I actually wish I lived in Cali, I would take you up on your offer - if for no other reason than I would love to see a handfasting ceremony - as well as how beautiful you will look.  The wedding sounds like it will be fascinating.

Oh my UI .... the 29th how close it is getting. A Question I'm sure you've been asked....will you be celebrating "Big Time" Every 4 years? I have never met anyone married on Feb 29th.

Lol he was laughing all the way to the kitchen... hes such a nut.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 15, 2008....
Shaken/Stirred - Awww, that is so incredibly sweet of you!

FG - You would be more than welcome to attend.  I will try to get many pictures, that goes without saying, though I have yet to find a photographer. Yipes!

waking - Yes, we may do something mildly celebratory, but will save any grand gestures for every 4 years.  That was part of the charm and attraction in choosing that date.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 15, 2008....
waking - I have to laugh with you.  Bill did the same thing when I proposed the date to him.
  • evil_twin said on Jan 15, 2008....
I like your invitation! It's really pretty. Good luck finding the perfect dress :-) I'm sure you'll get something good real soon!

ET - Thank you.  I'm sure the dress will present it's self soon. (I hope!)  So, have you and Nat done any invitation shopping?  You two are be in this same situation as I am before too long.
  • evil_twin said on Jan 15, 2008....
Well....we have some invitations already. We haven't sent them out or anything yet though. We were told they should be sent out 2-3 months in advance, so I guess that's soon huh?

  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 15, 2008....
ET - That's what I read too.  (two months)  Mine were a little late due to gramma and all, but most people already knew about the wedding.  Yes, your happy day is inching closer and closer each day. ;)
  • evil_twin said on Jan 15, 2008....
Yes, it's getting really close! Amazing how fast the time flies huh?

ET - Are you getting a little nervous?  Yes, it can creep up on you.  I have tried to work on details steadily so I don't get buried under the avalanche of decisions that have to be made.
  • wombat said on Jan 15, 2008....

I loved the link to the dresses....I liked the third and fifth one, maybe easier to incorporate into a mesh of modern?  Or maybe just because I had a sleeveless dress and a hat with a veil in my second marriage--the bigger marriage ceremony I had.

The invitaions look nice, and just the thoughts of a wedding are giving me happy thoughts, too!  Early Best wishes to you and to that other special couple, also!

  • cntlvmenuf said on Jan 15, 2008....
U-I: Can't wait to see the dress when you get it (Yes its gonna present itself soon!!!).
Would have loved to be in attendance if I lived in Cali....any chance of holding a reception here at Soulcast???
  • Mr_Box said on Jan 15, 2008....

Very nice invitation. Thank you for sharing that with us. I'm really excited for you, Ms. Ironic. You'll find your dress I'm sure.

    Congrats!

    I love the bamboo.  And the 30's style dresses are simply elegant.  I had something similar to that general style, but with almost no lace.  It is fun doing all this planning, isn't it?  I enjoyed the wedding much more than the marriage.  I hope both are fab for you!  {{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
  • fearing said on Jan 16, 2008....
The invitation is beautiful U-I!  You designed them?  You did a very nice job.  Is handfasting an Irish tradition?  I could look it up but I haven't reached that level of caffeine yet this morning.  ;-)  I can't wait to hear more wedding plans.
  • fearing said on Jan 16, 2008....
p.s. - I may have to send a "regret".  Think I'm moving on the 29th.  You could put off the wedding and come help me move?  lol!  Just teasing, I can't wait to see pics!
  • Twylarants said on Jan 16, 2008....
The invitation is beautiful, Unique.  You should be a professional wedding planner...you're really good at it!
I love the dress in the photo..it's stunning.  I'm looking forward to seeing the photos, hope you have perfect weather on the 29th!

wombie - I had a long sleeve very formal dress last time.  This time I want something less ostentacious.

cntlvme - You bet!  I will be posting pictures of the ceremony and we can have a cake and champagne reception here.

JBox - thank you.  I'm not freaked out about the dress because it's been my experience that things come together for events that are meant to be.

crybaby - yes it does!  It's leap year this year, so we get an extra day in February.

kru - The bamboo is our nod to the fact that we met doing jujitsu.   The celtic border is our mutual heritage of Irish decent.  I do like the planning part of a wedding.  It's time to pull out all the creative stops.

fearing - yes, hand fasting is a celtic tradition that the Irish kept alive as a valid way to marry until 1940.  I also choose deep blue in the invitation to represent fidelity, which was an element missing from my last marriage.

Twyla - Thank you.  I would love to be a wedding designer/planner if there were a decent amount of money to compensate for the amount of stress that many brides impose on such people.

MissMimi - The dress is fabulous.  So is the price, and gosh darn it I'm not even close to that size.  I'm sure I'll find something along those lines.

Mamie - As I understand it, many vow renewals are done this way ;)

pickers - yes, the fun part is starting to happen!

CW - Thank you.  The way I see it, it will be a spectacular success or a spectacular flop.  Either way a memorable event.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 16, 2008....
MM&I - I will make sure a picture of the dress goes up.  I doubt that it will be the one in the picture since the price tag is well beyond my means.
  • hidufel said on Jan 16, 2008....
Thanks for the invite! I will be there in spirit at least!

Lol i noticed the date... not going to be very hard to remember the anniversary now is it?!

Good luck to you two and many many happy years to come, together.

  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 16, 2008....
hidufel - spirits count, at least at the place we're getting married.  there is rumored to be a female ghost who roams the premises.  Yes, the remembering part will be easy.
