Sheep Among Wolves
"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves" Matt: 10:16
The sun had just dropped over the hills to the west. Soon it would be dark. The trucks were late. There were horses tied to a fence. We were waiting for the new stock.
Rocks were rolling down the hill, and I stuck out my foot to stop them. They were more like pebbles, some a little bigger. I looked up suddenly hearing the truck pulling in with my new stock.
It was a sheep, and an angora goat. A sheep is nearly helpless by itself. It doesn't climb very well, run very fast, bite, kick nor claw. Its enemies are too numerous to name.
As I am leading my new stock to the shed I had prepared for them, separate not together, I began to think about a passage of scripture.
Matt: 10 tells us that all sorts of trials await a sheep. But the sheep it refers to is us. There will be sorts of trials, scourging, and betrayal, but in the midst of all this, we are promised a shepherd.
In John 10, it tells us that the Good Shepherd gives his life for the sheep, that he calls each sheep by name, that he is the door of the sheepfold through which the sheep is saved, and finds rich green pasture.
I am at peace with these scriptures, for I know the Good Shepherd personally.
