There, I said it out loud! Yes, I want to be popular on this blog. It's one of the reasons I spend my time and effort here. I want hundreds of people subscribing to my site, because that means there are hundreds of people who care about what I think. I want as many people as possible to look at my screen name and think 'hey, I like him', or 'hey, he makes me think', or 'hey, what he just wrote helped me'.

It's true. If I just wanted somewhere to get my thoughts out in writing, I would use my Microsoft Word and save it to my hard disk. But I didn't come here, I don't spend so much time here, just to write down my words. I came here to socialize, to get to know other people all over the country, all over the world, and let them get to know me. The ONLY way to do that is to be popular. I know that, I freely admit it. I'm an attention whore.

I write on a variety of topics, in a variety of styles, purposely. Sometimes to entertain, sometimes to inform, sometimes to share, sometimes to invoke thought, in order to reach as many people as possible. Often, I will write with one or a few specific people in mind, first to get a message to them. Second, because I know that there are many people who read those people, and if they comment, perhaps their readers will come and look at what I wrote. I'm not ashamed to admit that fact. But always, I write with the thought of wanting as many people as I can get to come and read my posts. I want to have one or two of those posts with 500 views and 200 comments! I want to break the 100 subscribers mark!

But I don't want these things just because I'm an attention whore. I want these things because I think I have something to say that is of value to other people. I think I have stories that many people will enjoy reading. And I think I write pretty good poetry too. :-) And I do all of this for the enjoyment and edification of other people, not for myself. That's why I have chosen a public forum to write these things in.

Yes, I want to be popular. Is that such a bad thing?

At least you're honest. Everyone here wants someone to read them. Otherwise why would they bother?

But I think that you can still enjoy yourself here greatly without hundreds of readers and comments. It's all about the quality of interaction, IMO.

    That's just me.

I care if people read me, sure. If no one did, I wouldn't stick around talking to myself. But I don't need to be POPULAR to be satisfied.

Let's face it. I'm not that interesting. So not everyone will care what I have to say. But if 5 or 10 people can relate to me, I'm happy.

I fail to understand why this is such an issue lately.

If someone isn't getting any readers, then maybe they're not talking about anything people can relate to? Or maybe they aren't getting out there and letting anyone know they exist?

There are a lot of people writing but not very many interacting. I've commented to quite a few people who appear to be new and who I actually found quite interesting.

I don't believe even one of them ever responded to my comments. So I never read them again. That's just how it goes.

If you're here to write and don't care about interaction, then don't bitch if no one responds.

And if you're here to make friends and get advice, then you better put yourself out there and start talking to people.

    You get what you give.

What else is there to say?
  • travelr712 said on Jan 12, 2008....
of course you're interesting, boxershorts, you're the cool guy with the great hair and the incredible job who's only problem in life seems to be a poor sense of directions while driving :-)

and i agree with you that if just a few people read and comment on my posts, i'm happy. i've been to many people's blogs where they have post after post with 0 comments, i feel for them. and i know that if i want other people to read me, i need to go and comment on their blogs. so i do. besides, allot of people here write some really cool stuff, so i always get something out of it.
  • Mr_Box said on Jan 12, 2008....

Thanks for finding me interesting. But you don't always comment to every post I make either.

Which is fine because not everything I say is relatable. So I don't take that personally the way some other people do.

If I have nothing to say to someone, I won't just comment to make them feel better. If their words don't touch me, my words will likely not touch them either.

I feel bad for people who never get comments too. But this place is too big to expect to be noticed if you don't go out and show your face.

When I first got here, I didn't even write anything at my own blog. I spent time commenting and getting a feel for the people before I even bothered to write.

    But I approach things differently.

And my life has plenty of snags in it. I just choose to keep those things private.

  • travelr712 said on Jan 12, 2008....
you do know that was all said tongue in cheek, right? i know you have snags in your life, you wouldn't be human if you didn't. and btw, i did the same thing you did when i first came here last, what was it, may? i just went around reading some people and commenting, to sort of get the feel of the place, if you will. and i don't always comment on the posts that i read either. and i try to get to as many as i can, but lately i've been so busy that it seems i can only keep up with pm's, the featured page and the 'my conversations' tab. i'm sure you know how that is. :-)
  • Mr_Box said on Jan 12, 2008....

I only come here a few times a week, so there is no way I can comment to everyone who might be interesting.

But when I am here, I'm always looking for something cool to read. That's the whole point. To enjoy yourself and have fun.

If someone isn't getting what they want out of the place, then they are free to leave right?

I didn't know if you seriously thought my life was perfect except a bad sense of direction. But since that's all I've really written about someone might think that's true.

  • travelr712 said on Jan 12, 2008....
yeah, i know you don't spend much time here. if you spent as much time on this site as i do, you'd be immensely popular. you just have that knack, and i don't. wish i could identify what it was, cause then i'd do it. and yeah, you're right, some people might think that about you, but i didn't. you wouldn't be able to ask questions about lemons if you hadn't had a few in your life, right? :-)
  • polarheart said on Jan 12, 2008....
I understand what you are saying Trav.  I get a great rush from getting comments on my posts.  I feel that when I was working and did not post much or comment much, people sort of lost touch with me and I slipped from people's minds, but of course I always have a hand full of close friends who make and effort to keep up to speed with my life as I did for them.  Now that I'm not working I intend to make a come-back!! LOL!!  I just want to be a part of the community here and share in the lives of everyone as they share in mine :-)

I don't have anything to comment on this post... at the moment, but maybe later. I really just wanted to stop by and say hello! :-) So... hello travelr, box and polar!

i have removed the entire conversation between myself, hottips4u and sunshine mariah, and i have blocked hottips from posting on my blog. i did this because i think people are concerned that if they comment here, she will turn her wrath on them, and i don't want that to happen on my blog. but i do think that other people have things to add on this subject, and i want to give them the chance to do so.

i have, created a new, drafted post with the entire conversation recorded for those who wish to see it here. i will unblock hottips tomorrow, after this particular blog is no longer in the rotation.

not a problem at all sunshine. you have every right to express your opinion. if you'd like to do it more directly, she has a post going on her site that i've been talking to her on, you could go there and join in if you like. and you didn't upset me or anything like that, nor did you do anything inappropriate. keep on bloging, my friend :-)

nite polarcakes, hope you sleep well :-)

No it's alright.. I'm finished with her! :-) She ruined my day enough as it is. Thanks anyways though.

Now, as for a comment to this post. I don't think there is anything wrong with you wanting to be popular. I am sure you aren't alone. To be honest, I've never thought about it myself... I guess I am just here to write, read, comment and enjoy myself. It's like a sort of therapy for me and I am slowly but surely getting things off my chest (which was evident yesterday) and it really does make me feel better. (until you get stupid comments in your pm from people like hottips, but anyways). I do enjoy reading you and your variety of posts... it keeps it interesting to say the least. I have no doubt you will reach those goals you set for yourself... like the 100 subscribers mark, as you are well on your way. Just continue to keep blogging, and we'll keep reading! :-) Thanks for everything! :-)

  • crybabylu said on Jan 12, 2008....

wow!  i just read where you put your post under here.

That really leaves me scratching my head.  It's hard to believe, huh?

I guess I just now understood the "popularity" Thing.  I thought when we were talking popularity, we were talking in RL.  I know I am not there.  Someone accused me of just saying things on my blog to be popular, and I thought was they don't read my blogs, or the comments, because most of the time, I feel way out in left field somewhere, and get a lot of comments of people disagreeing with my take on things.

So popular here in SC means lots of readers and comments, huh?  I guess if that is what popoular means, I do have some blogs where a lot of people have read it, and/or commented, but usually we are chewing on something like politics, and evolution or something like that.

However, I thought it meant the ones who are most "liked".

In my mind that meant, Twyla, Silver, Zayda, ET, Nursecutie, CW, destinydiva, Polar, Pickers, Moonriver, Mr. Box, Wombat, Battycat, gingersoul, ...etc...Oh there is such a long list of people who come to my mind on this one, that I can't put them all down.....

Yu know, they have the personalities that appeal to most people, friendly, lively, clever, witty, fun.........things like that.

As far as you, trav, and sunshine, I'm just now getting to know you, but Mr. Box, surely you know without a doubt.. how popular your posts are....I guess I need to go ahead and submit this comment and go check all of your blogs out so I will know if I even had a clue what I was talking about, when I came into this conversation.

Personally, I love all of your blogs...............Love, Dee

Well, you're IT in my book!
  • travelr712 said on Jan 12, 2008....
well cry, i don't know of any other way to measure popularity. if someone on here is liked by allot of people, then allot of people will read and comment on their posts. in a way it's like, if a certain musician is popular, they sell allot of albums. but it's a little different here, it's interactive. you actually talk to the people you like, you don't just read what they wrote, you talk to them, and they talk to you, so there's more intimacy. so yes, i see in that way, numbers show how popular a person is on a blog.

lala - well, that's what i was trying to do missey! :-)

fearing - i usually see that in any group, i'm well known, but not really popular. everybody knows who i am, but not very many people want to interact with me. that's why i like this place so much, people talk to me, appreciate what i have to say, want to tell me things, like what i write. thanks for saying i'm it in your book, that made me smile :-)
  • Twylarants said on Jan 12, 2008....
I'm thinking before I say anything cuz I want to get this right......still thinking.....
ok, it's 4 minutes now, so I'm just gonna talk...
I like everybody here.  (So far, so good).  For me, it's like sitting around talking to a group of friends, no matter who's post or  living room we're sitting in.  Does that make sense to anybody...besides me, I mean?
I rarely post, and when I do not many people read it, or maybe they do and just don't comment.   I don't think about it because when I comment on someone's post, they always seem happy to see me.  And I'm just as happy to talk to them on their post...happier, actually, because I've never been a very good host.
I'm still thinking this through....the popularity thing, I mean.  I guess I don't care about the number of subscribers, because I forget to subscribe to people.  Doesn't mean I don't read them or don't like them as people.
While I'm thinking of it, why is everyone upset about anonymous comments and Hottips' opinions? Nothing against her, but it's only typed words on your monitor, who cares?  It's not a neighbor or a family member or someone you work with...who cares?
I like you Trav.  If I ever write anything that even remotely interests you...ha ha ha...I have no idea where I was gonna go with this sentence...lol...I'm hitting submit now..

  • fearing said on Jan 12, 2008....
I have fulfilled my purpose Trav - I made you smile.  I shall rest well tonight.

Twyla - Well said!  I think I see SC about the same way you do - just sitting around talking to some friends.  I'll admit I'd like my reader number to go up to match the "Fearing reads" number because the inconsistency upsets me and I like a natural balance to things.  It's a quirk.  I should do a post about it....See?  Now you have me going off on a trail.....

I think I'll do another Trav popularity test on my computer.......3....2....1...yup - still IT!
  • Eilan said on Jan 12, 2008....
I care about popularity, both on SC and IRL. I think most of us, despite our assertions to the contrary, would be lying if we said otherwise.

I aspire to popularity, but I'm not going to be on that first page of the "popular" list because I'm only going to make a half-assed effort to achieve it. Half-assed efforts are the story of my life. However, I love talking about myself, and that's mostly why I'm here--my other haunt wasn't a place where I could discuss all the things I wanted to discuss.

I read a lot more blog entries, both of people I'm subscribed to and people I'm not subscribed to, than I comment on, but I can't really bring myself to become a complete comment whore. Half-assed comment whore maybe. Again, the story of my life.

Most of the time, I'm happy with the number of responses I'm getting, However, I do take it kinda personally when I think I have something interesting to say and it gets a handful of views or responses when a blog about the merits of one-ply versus two-ply toilet paper goes on for days. If I made up a blog whining about the lack of response, I'd get some attention, but it's not really the attention I want. Negative reinforcement.

To be honest, I'm surprised that I have as many readers as I have. I followed a small group of people here from another site, and I tend to interact with them the most because I'm comfortable with them.

My personality isn't to a lot of people's liking, and I accept that.
  • travelr712 said on Jan 12, 2008....
well that was kinda cool twila, i like what you did there. and yes, i know what you mean about sitting around and talking. that's a really good way to put it.

lol fearing! that's two smiles you got out of me tonight. you can sleep for a week now :-)

I enjoy having people read my blog and comment. How could I not like that? It's wonderful to be able to talk to people and have them relate to my life and give advice and root for me when things get tough. And in return, I certainly hope I've returned the favor to other people.

I came here to write and never expected anyone to read me. It was a pleasant surprise when people commented and it definitely made me happy. And it compelled me to want to read my commenters blogs and get to know them too.

Sometimes I get quiet and don't have anything of interest to share at my blog. But I still read other people's stuff and offer comments. For me it's not really about popularity, but about friendships. And I'm just lucky enough that I've made a lot of friends here.

  • travelr712 said on Jan 12, 2008....
eilan - well, it's not something you can really make a plan for and have it work out, like saving for retirement. it's not something that can be forced. i think the only thing a person can do is get out there as much as possible, treat others with respect and kindness, and try to write about things that will interest as many others as possible.

i also think i know what you meant about your personality. you seem to me to be very straight forward with your thoughts and responses. i'm the same way, and many people don't like that. i'm guessing that's what you're talking about. but i like you, if that makes any difference :-)

well et, you've certainly returned the favor to me. you're my best friend on this blog, and one of my best friends in the world.

And I wouldn't know but I don't think popularity is all its cranked up to be... once you get to the top there is no where to go but down & Its "Quality Not Quantity" that matters...those are some pretty tall orders hehe I just stay down here where I am comfortable..... Good luck
  • destinydiva said on Jan 13, 2008....
I should keep my thoughts to myself on this topic as they always come out wrong or are taken the wrong way anyways. but one thing I will say is waking is right, its quality not quantity. I may have a lot of readers but out of all those I only have a few close friends here. friends I know that will support me when I have shit going on in my life, friends that I have a giggle with and play games with. friends that make me see situations clearly, and so as long as that number of friends (maybe 9 or 10) stays the same, I dont care what happens to the other numbers!! no one seems to believe that I can feel that way, sure its nice to have a lot of readers, but the nicest part is those 9 or 10 that are true friends.

  • silverwhisper said on Jan 13, 2008....
popularity is a funny thing, trav. :>

when i first got here in july 2006, i figured that i'd probably meet some interesting people, learn some interesting stories, share some of my confusion. i did not come here with the purpose of being popular, and indeed, i'd argue that most of the people who appear at the upper end of the list would say the same. indeed, having at one point or another having discussed the matter with just about all of them, i can say that pretty darned definitively.

i've never been particularly popular IRL, and frankly, considering that on SC popularity just means how many people are subscribed to you, i think SC's definition is a pretty weak metric for popularity. there are people on SC better-liked than me, and that's as it should be. and as most of you guys already know, # of subscribers primarily rewards longevity, not quality: if you doubt me, how many of the top 15 are actually active anymore?

one thing i would love (although i don't expect we'll ever see it) on SC is a slashdot-style "karma" system for comments, so that you could give a poster props for a particularly interesting/funny/cool comment. then they could display that list, perhaps in place of or next to the "most popular" list. now that list would be cool to be on.

and you know, you usually do make me think, trav. i like that about reading you. :>

    ed
  • travelr712 said on Jan 13, 2008....
well, thanks ed, i really appreciate you saying i make you think. that's one of the purposes behind the things i write, to make people think. i didn't come here to be popular either. but with all the recent discussion of popularity and how people aren't looking for it, i felt compelled to say at least something on the issue. i know for a fact, that inside, EVERYONE wants to be popular, well liked, loved, and cared about. that's the way humans are built. people who are bitter, or withdrawn, or the like, usually are that way because they feel lacking in one or more of those departments. so i would say that the word popular here is the problem. it's not the desire to be popular in itself, it's the motives behind the desire that are in question, imo.

"I want hundreds of people subscribing to my site, because that means there are hundreds of people who care about what I think."  LOL.... Ah, trav, if that were only true, I'd be happier'n a pig in shit, but people usually subscribe so that you'll subscribe back at them... or because you subscribed to them and they feel like they should reciprocate.  Why?  Because everyone wants to be popular.  Is it wrong to want that?  No, but don't get your heart set on it.  There's nothing wrong with making a few really good friends as opposed to skimming the surface with hundreds of people.  I haven't read all the comments, but I assume the tag "Democrats" refers to how the Dems say a little bit of everything in hopes that they can please everyone and everyone will vote for them.  Doesn't work particularly well for them... probably won't for us either.  I show a lot of different facets of myself here, too, but they're all real.  Hopefully, that's what others are doing, too.
  • travelr712 said on Jan 13, 2008....
i have several really good friends here. some i talk to every day, some a few times a week, but they're people that i can always count on. so i'm good in that department. and my heart's not set on popularity, but i was trying to be honest. it does matter to me how many people read and respond to my posts. i write it for other people to read, not for myself, so that makes the responses important to me.
  • kruuyai said on Jan 13, 2008....
trav:  I do understand.  To tell you the truth.. Whether or not you can change someone's life with blogging remains to be seen, but then again, stranger things have happened.

I want to do the same for people, inspire them, entertain them, make them smile and think back on what I said and share a private chuckle...

For me it isn't about being popular, if one person, even just one is moved, touched or amused by what I wrote my job will be done.

Hi Trav! I have been spending my time reading many blogs! I realised you were the first to ever read anything I posted! I came accross this, I really did like your write up. I am sure you are a good writer. I can't wait to read some of your poems. You had quite afight here, did't you? It is reassuring to see there are others to stand up for others. Thumbs up!!!

i know for a fact, that inside, everyone wants to be popular, well liked, loved, and cared about. that's the way humans are built.

you know, i disagree. people want to be loved and cared about, sure. but there are most definitely people who don't want to be popular or well-liked.

hi carla, i'm not sure what fight you're talking about, can you refresh my memory? and i didn't realize i had the honor of being the first to read your blog, but i'm glad i do :-)

ed - well, here is one of the very few instances where you and i disagree, but i think it's more of a symantics thing actually. it's true that many people do not seek popularity, and do not want people to be around them. i believe that's usually because of traumatic experiences they've had in the past that leaves them bitter or feeling inadequate. if one was able to strip that all away, they would see that they really do have those desires after all, they've just been jaded by their experiences. now, i know this is a very broad description to the issue you've brought up, but in this medium, it's very difficult to have an in depth discussion on such a topic. i hope you can pick up on my meaning from what i've written.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 17, 2008....
see, i think you're conflating 2 different ideas here: being well-liked/cared about and being popular.

    ed
  • travelr712 said on Jan 17, 2008....
you see? it was semantics after all :-) it's true that popularity doesn't always mean well liked, it more means well known. well, even that definition has many connotations, so it becomes more one's personal definition. but i believe that deep inside, everyone would like it if everyone else in the world liked them. that's all i was trying to say i guess.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 17, 2008....
i believe that deep inside, everyone would like it if everyone else in the world liked them

but see, that part doesn't hold true for me. i don't want everyone else to like me. indeed, i want a number of people to dislike me actively--because i espouse and articulate certain ideals and stances. i like to think that i do those things pretty well, and the measure to which i am disliked for doing that well is to me is in some measure a badge of honor.

should you or i want to be liked by, say, the KKK? skinheads? hell, no! i have little but pity/contempt for them. and those guys would hate me, for being asian and being married to a caucasian woman. they would hate me for "diluting the white race" and her as a "race traitor".

the truth is that some people's opinions are of no importance to me, trav. so i know that people are going to dislike me. i just want to make damned sure that if they dislike me, they do so for a good reason. see?

If your going to be loved/hated, profit' isn't the worst reason for such posturing.

I'm trying to figure out why the tag "democrats" is on THIS post about popularity!

    ~Grace~

  • travelr712 said on Jan 17, 2008....
jessi - i agree with you. nothing wrong with parlaying popularity into profit, i always say

gg - because some people believe that democrats are out to be just popular, not run efficient gov't

silver - but you see, what you're railing against is the beliefs of organizations, and the members who subscribe to them. i'd dare say that you could find a couple members in either of those organizations that would genuinely like you when they weren't at the meetings, and spit hate mongering at you when they were, because they just want to be part of the group, not that they hold the same beliefs. so of course since those people hold prejudicial beliefs against you, you don't care about their opinion. but really, if your race didn't matter to them, wouldn't you want them to look favorably on you? and isn't that the very nature of the reason that you don't care about their opinion, the fact that they have made this judgment of dislike about you without actually knowing you, simply based on your heritage?
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 17, 2008....
    no.

what i'm talking about may be believed by organizations, but those believers have taken those beliefs and made 'em their own. this is true of any organization centering upon ideology, whether it be so-called white power or what have you. and while there may well be sheep who are part of those organizations, i've done a little research about 'em. most aren't.

i don't care about their opinions b/c some opinions simply don't merit consideration. if someone came to me and said "the moon really is made of green cheese" i really have no problems ignoring that person or what he or she might say. b/c someone that stupid simply isn't worth my time--or indeed, the mental bandwidth.

    it's the same thing here.

wanting everyone to like you, quite frankly, strikes me as a lack of confidence in one's own validity. but your or my validity is best self-derived b/c otherwise, it has no meaning of its own, in a vacuum.

there's a meatloaf song i would do anything for love. the final line of the chorus is "but i won't do that". there are some things that you cannot do for other people b/c to do them would change the nature of who you are, which in turn might undermine/squash the very reason those people like you.

    ed
  • travelr712 said on Jan 17, 2008....
i agree with all you've said ed, that you do not care about those people's opinions of you. but if you truly didn't care if they liked you or not, you'd feel ambivalence toward them, you wouldn't even bring them up. now, it's true that you don't let their opinions color who you are or what you do, but just the fact that you dislike them, shows the contrast that you would like them if they were accepting toward you, if they showed you that they liked you. but i fear that we can banter this back and forth all day, and won't resolve the issue.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 17, 2008....
no, i'd bring it up b/c you--someone whose opinion does mean something to me--asserted that everyone wants to be popular. it's not that i dislike 'em, it's that they don't matter.

i agree that we're more or less talking about matter of degree here, though. :>

well that's a comment enough moyz. i see you around often, and sometimes wondered why you didn't join in more. i think most people don't really care that much what anyone says, not in the context of thinking badly of them, as long as the person commenting is considerate and respectful, so don't feel shy, just type whatever comes to mind at the time, even if it is only a hug. to me, this place is all about interraction, and the more people who comment, the more perspectives i get.

trav: you can always rely upon "hottips" to use baseless insinuation rather than make coherent points and actually provide any meaningful argumentation in support of them. she depends instead on insinuation b/c she doesn't have to do the hard work of actually making such arguments--never mind (heaven forfend!) defending them. you see, when all you're after is attention--as "hottips" is doing so painfully obviously here--investing the time and thought into an actual argument is undesirable: note that she only ever appears on other soulcasters' featured posts.

i continue to find it amusing that she still sees me in practically every other soulcaster she encounters, btw. i'm starting to wonder if she's a stalker, b/c she's obviously obsessed. :>

hmm, racist and prejudiced, albiet totally off base, huh jessi? and just yesterday you were all up in arms on your blog about how wrong it was to be prejudiced.

just so's you don't have to look it up, here's the definitions of 'prejudice':

    1. opinion formed beforehand: a preformed opinion, usually an unfavorable one, based on insufficient knowledge, irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes

    2. holding of ill-informed opinions: the holding of preformed opinions based on insufficient knowledge, irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes

    3. irrational dislike of somebody: an unfounded hatred, fear, or mistrust of a person or group, especially one of a particular religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual preference, or social status
pick one, jessi, they all apply to your comment.
