There are phrases we use without knowing why - like "She needs to be in the limelight." LIMElight? And just what are "cockles" as they relate to a heart? Things that made sense 200 years ago still persist beyond their common use...
Is there a phrase or term that drives you nuts because you CAN'T make sense of it? Let's see if we can help each other out, here...

Limelight - I have NOT Wiki'ed this, so someone had better.. It's either...
From the days of vaudeville/early stage variety shows, foot lights at front edge of stage burned lime as a component, ... or ... early flash photogoraphy burned lime.

I;ll be just as interested as you,so I'm off to Wiki litnow!

Hilarious! Shows how a childhood of "knowledge" can be so off! Wiki says it's a set of night clubs! LOL

I used to hear a lot of phrases that I do not hear any more. Younger people
look at you like you are crazy if you say something that they have not heard
Britney or someone on MTV say it. I figure limelight sticks around because it
is pretty easily understood at spotlight. In days gone by it was ...

a lighting unit for spotlighting the front of the stage, producing illumination by
means of a flame of mixed gases directed at a cylinder of lime and having a
special lens for concentrating the light in a strong beam.

That came from the dictionary. Remember that a lot of entries on Wikipedia are
put there by blokes like you and me who may or may not know what they are
talking about. We can only hope they get reviewed by someone.

Spare The Rod and Spoil The Child - this does NOT mean BEAT YOUR KIDS!!!! a rod was a shepard's tool for GUIDING the sheep, not beating them!!!! Without guidance, kids are spoiled.
    What the hell is BANDYING??

cockles!!!  aaww my grandad used to talk about them! I just like eating them :-) but cockles were a romantic gift at some point....think that maybe an english/irish thing...like walking hand in hand with your lover 6 zillion years ago along the promenade....and these days a guy buys you a kebab on the way home from a club...well in those days, it was a carton of cockles after a night out ballroom dancin :-) !!!!   awww the depths of true love   :-) xx

I figured it would take someone from Ye Olde Country to decipher the cockles mystery. Shades of Sherlock.

Alienated- THANK YOU I'm not so off after all! Heheh!

And have you ever found yourself "Up the boo-igh"? Or "Right up the boo-igh"?

    That's "Boo" and  " I "

Will offer translation next time i'm on,  as the spelling is a guess and it's the sound of it. You'll either know or not, is all.

When did give a hoot give in to give a shit ?
I seem to remember being gay was just another expression for being happy but look at what it evolved into.  I don't recognize today's expressions so that means I'm either an old geezer  or totally out of the " new " trends.... like it's a ' bomb' for being good (?).
