Yesterday was a pretty stormy day for us out here in California. Northern California had a worse time of it than we did, but we got hit pretty hard too. At least where I was. We had a lot of rain and some really gusty winds that knocked out power at my office, and kept flickering the lights at home too.

And in the midst of this weather, we lost one of our trees. It was nice old flowering plum tree that I always parked my car under to get the shade. Luckily my car wasn't parked there yesterday or else it'd be flattened now!

Here is a picture of the sad old tree.

treedown

I'm going to miss it. We never even got to see it bloom with flowers because we moved in during the summer. But we did get the pleasure of seeing it filled with plums. They tasted pretty good too. The birds certainly thought so. They'd eat the plums and then poop out purple crap onto our cars. So maybe I won't miss that part as much?

But it was still a nice tree and now it's gone. The neighbors across the street from us lost their plum tree too. It tipped right over and crashed into the yard. Thankfully away from the house. But the people around the corner weren't as lucky. They had a big oak tree fall on their roof.

We're supposed to get more rain today so I think it's a good time to just stay indoors and do nothing. Not that I had a ton of plans anyway. We never do anything really. But now we don't have to feel lazy for wanting to stay at home all day!

I hate wind though. Like, really hate it. I've already told people here before that I'm prone to panic attacks because I'm such a ball of nerves all the time. Well, wind freaks me out. I think in a past life, I must have died in a tornado or a hurricane or something involving wind. Just the sound of it whipping against the house makes my heart race. I'm a little crazy.

Do you have any weird phobias like that? It could just be me....

PS: Maybe I should have gotten the tornado and hurricane insurance policy for my laptop after all?

Our poor tree!!! I am just glad that the really bad wind has gone too because I don't like it either. Maybe we both died in tornadoes before??? Or we are just big fraidy cats? LOL!

I am ready for summer now and it's only January......

I'm ready for summer too! The wind seems to be starting up again too and I don't like that :-(

Here's a link to a news blurb about the storm in case anyone is curious....

destiny--I was lucky that my car was in the driveway and not on the street, huh? I don't like elevators either. I'm a bit claustrophobic too. Hopefully you were never buried alive! Yikes!

Well silly me loves the wind! When I lived in Washigton state, I loved to hear the wind gust and blow.  Once it almost picked me up while walking to my car after work...it did push me right along!  Yes, it is good you were not parked there under that tree!!  I am glad to see you both are safe and sound.  hug each other tight you 2 fraidy cats!  LOL  hang on!! it will be over soon.  Never a dull moment in your neighborhood e.t.!

ouch! Glad your tree didn't hurt anyone or anything! That is sad though that you won't see it blossom this spring. Purple poop? Be glad for that!!
I too must have had a past life thing...and it is fire...I have a very big respect for how powerful and dangerous it is even though I don't consciously know of the whys.

quiteone--There's always something exciting happening in this neighborhood huh? We will definitely hug each other tight and stay indoors! No more parking under trees for me....

mamie--I'll miss the tree. No more shade! But the purple bird poop I won't miss as much. Fire is a scary thing too. But I don't have a fear of it the way I do wind. I really do believe it's some sort of past life memory!

I wondered about you guys when I saw this on the news.  Glad you're ok.  I love trees and hate to see this photo!  I used to live where we had alot of tornados and high damaging winds, and I got scared pretty good a few times.  My worst fear, as everyone probably knows by now, especially quietone, lol, is of driving in bad weather.  I like doing the driving, not letting the car drive me!  (slip sliding away...)  Which is also the reason I never touch the cruise control, either!

Take care and enjoy your time indoors!

You know what that picture reminds me of, the picture you took of your bathtub that one time!  Weird!  Anywayz, I was of those many peoples whose power went out, luckily it came back on a few hours later, but those few hours were no fun.  As for being afraid of stuffs I want to say maybe I died before from water because I have asthma and water just seems to remind me of how I can't breathe...I dunno if that makes sense.  I'm not afraid of water though, sometimes the ocean though!  Maybe thats it.  Neat post!

I'm not ready for summer - don't wish winter away. :-p We don't have thunderstorms very often in winter, and that suits me just fine.

It's not common knowledge, but I'm afraid of thunderstorms. Isn't that stupid? I love them and I sort of feel drawn to/identify with them, but I hate being by myself (well, the only adult home anyway) during one of them - especially if the power goes out or keeps flickering. I jump every time the thunder crashes or lightning flashes, and I know it's dumb -- especially since I've lived in hurricane territory (and we got hit pretty hard by Fran and Floyd and a few others over the years!). Why does a dumb regular storm scare me when those don't? I don't know.

You're not alone with irrational weather fears. ;-) ((hugs))

I hope you guys keep power and that the plum tree is the worst of the damage for you.

That sucks about your tree. Damn. That was a nice tree. At least it wasn't bigger and didn't fall on the house.

This weather sucks ass. But that's just because we're spoiled here and expect sunshine all the time.

I have a fear of lightning. Probably because I almost got struck by it once. Way too close for comfort. I love looking at it, but only if it's far away.

An oak tree fell on our house back in August.  I blogged about it, but I might have put some of those posts in draft mode.  Did $15,000 in damage, and we're still making repairs, though the stuff that had to be fixed is fixed.

Now my daughters and I get a bit antsy when the wind blows a little harder than normal.  I don't think my husband realizes how scared it makes us because he wasn't home at the time, so he didn't get to feel the house shake when it got walloped.  The power went off at almost the same moment because another tree snapped the power line.  It was scary.

I've been watching that mess up there in Northern California, and it's not pretty.  Y'all aren't getting it any worse now, are ye?  That's a mighty mean storm a brewin'

    Kyle,
I'm sorry about your tree.  That must have been a really fierce wind.

I have a thing about wind too.  Sometimes I have to turn the tv or music up to cover the sound of it.  I think a prolonged sustained wind could truly drive me insane.  Cold winter wind at night is the worst.  Maybe I died in a blizzard in a past life?

kyle i get scaredwith storms too... especially if it is during the night. hey remembered i made a post just like this too? where some of our trees got blown by the wind? anyway i hope you and natalie stay safe!!! =)

wombat--We enjoyed our day inside! It was nice actually. I hate driving in bad weather too. I have trouble seeing if it's night time and it's raining. But even during the day I don't like it either because I'm always worried about the other drivers. They go so fast!

ninja--Our power went out for a short time at home, but I wasn't here then. The clocks were flashing though. But at my office, we waited for about 2 hours for it to come back on, then we went home. So you're afraid of being underwater and not able to breathe? I can understand that!

infernal--Thunderstorms huh? I like them, but I admit they make me a little nervous too. Especially if the thunder is really loud. How can that not scare you a little?! It's freaky! I'm glad I'm not alone with my weather fears :-)

Mr. Box--Yeah, I was there too when that lightning struck! It almost fried me too. But for some reason, I don't worry about it. Maybe because they say lightning never strikes the same place twice? Although, we weren't actually struck by it....but I totally understand your fear!

eilan--I remember seeing that post of yours! That was horrible. That was like one of my biggest fears yesterday. We have a really big oak tree in the backyard and it's a little weak in the trunk because ants have hollowed it out. I was hoping against hope that it wouldn't crash into our bedroom. I can imagine how scary that was for you guys!

crybaby--I think the worst has passed us now. It's been raining a lot, but no more high winds. They're still worried about mudslides though. We're not in the path of that though.

CW--It was a fierce wind! The gusts were pretty strong at times and you could hear stuff hitting the house. I hate the wind more at night too. I can't sleep! I'm too nervous and it's so loud.

queen--Thanks! We'll stay safe. Storms are really nerve wracking aren't they?

You suffer from panic attacks?  Oh no! You poor kid!
Have I used up my allotment of !!!s yet?
Sorry, Kyle, I got carried away.
I am the "Queen of Panic Attacks".  They began when I was 16, and by 36 I was agoraphobic.  You feel as though you're dying, right?  I took medication for 11 years although I was fine after about 2 years, but I couldn't convince myself I'd be ok without it for the longest time.
Both my parents had them and 2 of my sons had to go on meds to get through high school.
I feel for you, seriously.  Jeez, I'm sorry to hear that.
I saw a waterspout when my oldest son was a baby.  We were down the Jersey shore and it was over the bay. I was paralyzed with fear, couldn't move.
To this day I go from window to window during a storm to see if there's a tornado.

  • evil_twin said on Jan 05, 2008....
twyla--Yup, I get really bad panic attacks sometimes. I've had them since I was 8 years old. I have medication for it too. I used to take something every day for awhile, but now I just take it if I can't calm myself down. I can control them pretty good now most of the time, but sometimes I need help still. And I am deathly afraid of tornadoes. It's the wind thing. But luckily we don't get those here!

wow! reminds me of the haiku i wrote this morning, and one last june

    Morning wind blowing
    angry protest amongst trees;
    with a crack, wind wins

    and last june

    magnificent oak
strength of ages tall and wise
    the wind was stronger

sucks you lost your tree... glad no other damage happened!

  • wakingharmony said on Jan 05, 2008....
So sorry about your tree! but weird I love the weather too. I miss living in the sierra Nevada Mts. I didn't live to far from Donner pass. up hwy. 395 they are having the snow storm of the century I heard.
  • allswell said on Jan 06, 2008....

Hey...Well i'm glad you made it through the storm ok...it sucks about your tree though! Maybe you can put a new tree there and have fun watching it grow...it can symbolize yours and Natalies relationship...as you relationship grows and developes more everyday so will the tree...lol...just a thought! After reading this i had to write  my dad-which lives in california also and made sure he was ok...luckily he said he didn't get too much from the storm...just rain...so i was glad!

I hope you both are having a great weekend!!

    alls:)

I know storms cause a lot of damage, but i love to watch them from the window:the lashhing rain ,the bolts of lightning.where i live we get alot of hailstones when we have storms. Storms are scary but nice to cuddle up with hubby and a mug of coffe
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jan 07, 2008....
The storm was pretty spectacular here in the bay area and north.  I lost power to my apartment friday afternoon until late evening.  On my trip up north is was littered with trees and branches from the wind and rain.  About a city block from my Grandma's house a redwood fell and obliterated a house.  I have a picture of it that I will post as soon as I get things sorted out.
  • evil_twin said on Jan 07, 2008....
hidufel--I liked your poems! They do fit with this picture a lot.

waking--I hear the Sierra mountains got a ton of snow. I bet the skiers are happy! At least once the roads opened back up and they could get there!

alls--That's a really nice idea to plant a new tree :-) But the only snag with that is we just rent this place. And I hope in the next year or so, we'll be able to buy a house of our own. Maybe. Hopefully. But when we do, I love that idea!

merlin--Storms are good for cuddling up. I like to do that too when it's raining. But the wind....eh, I could do without that part!

uniquely--I heard it was really bad up north where you are. I saw pictures of downed trees like that on the news! It's horrible. We had a few bigger ones fall on houses here too, but no redwood trees! I'm curious to see the picture when you put it up.
