So I bought some new bed linen today and decided that, since I was revamping my room, I'd buy some that is 100% cotton (usually I get a 50/50 mix) and enjoy the additional comfort.

Having worked in a clothes packaging factory as a teen I remember well the filth that covered my hands at the end of a shift and so I always wash new clothing and linen before allowing its use so into the washing machine went the linen.

Now, I wanted it to be dry to go onto my bed tonight so I put it in the dryer which has meant it has dried relatively crease free and sits nicely on my bed right now.

But with it being 100% cotton I expect that line drying, which I prefer, will result in some hefty creases which would be fine except that I despise ironing and refuse to iron bed linen that is only going to be creased up as soon as you get into bed.

And strangely the thought of that bothers me where it hasn't ever before...

Perhaps it's because my MIL once called me 'slovenly' for not ironing the bedlinen or other things that she thought required the application of a hot iron, including underwear, or perhaps it's a sense of possessiveness and wanting my room to be as nice as it could be. I'm not sure but I hope it's a feeling that passes quickly!

Oh hell no. I don't iron bed linens. Or underwear. Good grief!
  • Alyss said on Jan 04, 2008....
Oh thank God! It isn't just me!

My mom never ironed linens or underwear or anything like that. I certainly don't! I didn't even own an iron until Natalie moved in. But she doesn't iron sheets either. That seems like a waste of time to me!

When I first read this, I had the same response as Zayda, and I hadn't yet seen her post: hell, no!

I wash linens before I use them, but that's about it.  I own an iron and have a really nice drop-down ironing board in the laundry room, but I've never used either of them.

Good Lord no!  I just buy the highest thread count in 50/50 and use a lot of Downy.

Alyss.......you gotta be kidding......lol......ironing? I hate ironing....and if i really have to waste my time doing it surely is not with linens. You definetely are not alone in this ...;-)

Oh good Lord, Alyss!  Hell, no!  I iron quilt fabric, that's about it.

I can remember ironing pillow cases for my mom when I was a kid though.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Jan 04, 2008....
I don't know anyone who irons their bed linens - not even my grandma or my Nana, and they're pretty uptight about stuff like that.

    I don't own an iron. :-D

I've got to agree with everybody else; ironing bed linens = blech. Maybe you could throw them in the dryer for a couple of minutes to get the worst creases out, then hang them up? Or, just cheat and only iron the parts that show when the bed's made up, and only when you feel like it. Heh.

Do you realize how much the title Bed Linen is like Bin Laden?
  • polarheart said on Jan 05, 2008....
Alyss, I dont iron bed linen, underwear, pjs, vests or anything else that doesn't get seen by the outside world :-)

I hate ironing so whatever doesn't need ironing doesn't get ironed!

If clothes come out of the tumbledrier and they are crease free and I get to fold them immediately, those wont get ironed either! LOL

i think it's downy that makes a wrinkle releaser in a spray bottle.  it's AWESOME.

that's as close to ironing ANYTHING that i come.

my grandmothers sister ironed EVERYTHING including bed linens and towels.....socks and underwear. she had the same opinion of my grandmother...."slovenly and uncaring of her family" because she refused to iron those things.
  • quietone said on Jan 05, 2008....
OMG - no way!  I iron nothing... except also my quilt fabric (and then only cause I have to) I also love drying my bed linen outside...I miss that the most!  Enjoy those nice new cotton sheets.  I love the high thread count sheets...wrinkled or not!
  • destinydiva said on Jan 05, 2008....
my mum irons her bedlinen...but i am like you! I despise ioning! and I figure its gonna be creased when i go to bed anyways! so no i never bother!! :-) xx

    What's an iron?

um, no, i don't think it's necessary to iron bet linens. some mother's in laws can be pretty judgemental, usually citing that they want the best for their sons, but i often wonder if it isn't competition they're worried about? like, they worry that their sons love their wives more than them? so they try to find anything they can, no matter how small, to criticise?

Have you heard of those new little "dryer balls"...maybe they aren't new. I've not seen them before until now, but they work awesome! Helps with static and whatnot, and is better than using dryer sheets. I also seem to think it makes things less wrinkly...but maybe I am just imagining that because I am in love with these little balls.
  • Sunshine_Mariah said on Jan 05, 2008....
Wow, I just went back and read my comment. The last line sounds a little naughty. Whoops. My apologies to everyone! Definitely not intended to read like that...
  • Eilan said on Jan 05, 2008....
There's nothing wrong with enjoying balls.  ;)
  • Sunshine_Mariah said on Jan 05, 2008....
    Hahaha, thanks Eilan! :-)

I am glad that I am not in the minority (so far) on this. ;-)

I have far better things to do with my time than slave over an ironing board.

Phedre, I like your username. Are you another Jacqueline Carey fan?

traveler, my MIl has always been judgemental of me. Very in fact and I have always known that she considered me to be not good enough for her son. I suppose she was right in a way since he and I are now divorcing...

Sunshine, LOL! I've never used the dryer balls but the washer balls are quite good provided that you don't mind your whites slowly turning grey!

Honestly, sometimes I iron the sheets, if rumpled - cotton simply improves in smoothness with ironing.

    <Ducks head in shame>

I have to admit...I have been known to iron bed linens occasionally.  For a guest bed, but not for my own.

I do not iron anything that does not require it.  In fact, I try to avoid ironing all together, going out of my way to buy work shirts and slacks that do not require it as often. But I am not afraid to iron, and will do if necessary...
  • hidufel said on Jan 08, 2008....
Wait... whats an Iron? And whats that got to do with sheets?
  • Racerboy said on Jan 08, 2008....
Pressed underwear?  Now that qualifies as a certifiable Monk-ism and a completely compulsive personality.  Heck I'm lucky if I wash the bed linens, just kidding.  I just swap them out, wash 'em and stick 'em in the cuppard.  Even shirts that require ironing either get it maybe once a year, or just plain don't get worn.  and anybody that irons their jeans is a certifiable nut!
  • Eilan said on Jan 08, 2008....
I went to high school with a girl who ironed almost everything, from jeans to underwear to bed linens.  She said she was the only person in her family who did this.
  • Alyss said on Feb 03, 2008....
ET if you wanted the bed linens ironed you would be the one doing it! :P

rb the tumble dryer is your friend with next to no ironing required afterwards.

Eilan so did she get counselling for her affliction? ;-)
  • quietone said on Feb 03, 2008....
OMG Alyss, I saw this on my conversations and thought it said  "Bin Laden"  do you iron yours?  LOL I guess I need a nap!!
  • Alyss said on Feb 03, 2008....
qt; oh my god that is hilarious! thank you for the laugh. ;-)
