I have decided that since it is now my bedroom rather than our bedroom that I am going to make a few changes. Nothing major, although I'd love to redecorate from scratch, as until the property ownership issue is decided that wouldn't be wise but cosmetic changes through furnishings and the like.

So today I have been window surfing for things to brighten it up and start the New Year with a fresh look.

I've decided against a new bed for now as that really is a substantial outlay money wise but  I've discovered a very nice quilt/bed cover that I like and has matching cushions, though I'm not sure what use they'd be beyond looking pretty! I've found some some complementary curtains and tie-backs that would work and also some bedside lamps which would fit in fairly well too.

And I'm going to get some new pillows as mine have seen better days and are somewhat flat.  Which would just about take it to the limit of what I can afford to spend right now.

I'm thinking also that I ought to move the portable television out of the bedroom as I never watch it in here and it takes up space and makes the room look cluttered but I've not totally decided that yet.

I know these are minor changes but I suppose it's symbolic in a way of my recognising my independence and making changes to suit me rather than DH...

Has anyone else spruced up their bedroom recently? Any suggestions for what else I could do to make it a nicer space to be in?

I recently moved my furniture around and angled the bed in the far corner across from the door. I now have one night stand on the wall side of the bed and a window is on the other, where I moved the plant stand. True, There is a bare space in the angle behind it but if I ever get ahead of things, I am thinking a big palm tree would look good back there. I also put the matching bench at the end of the bed. It looks cool!
I think pllows "just because they are pretty" is a brilliant idea! Have fun!!

I would love to be able to rearrange the furniture but the room won't allow it. Your room sounds lovely. ;-)

One of my favorite ways to redecorate on a budget is to change the pillows.  It can dramatically change the feel of a room.  Since it is your bedroom now, I think Mamie's idea to move the furniture around is also great.  Have you considered some inexpensive candles?  Also, scout around the rest of the house and you'll probably "find" things you can bring into the bedroom like space rugs, picture, etc.

You go! Totally change things around. Im a big fan of that myself, though only just to change things up. Id definitly recomend removing the portable tv especially if you dont need it. free up the room!

Alyss--Your bedroom should be a tranquil sanctuary for you. The bed cover you linked is beautiful. I love the cool and soothing colors of it. And I say go for adding pillows just to make it pretty, if thats what you want.

If you can't rearrange the furniture in any way, perhaps adding some green plants that won't bother your allergies, if you have them. The live plants will bring life to the room. Candles are a good idea too. What about a painting, photograph or print for the wall?

I agree with Zayda.  Make it your sanctuary Alyss.  I would love to be able to do that too.  I hope you enjoy it immensely.  :-)

    Thanks for the ideas everyone!

After giving it some thought I decided that the thing I like most about my room at present is an original oil painting of the sea so I am actually trying to blend everything new to complement that.

I have started with some pale turquoise silk curtains today, which I've already hung and also a new quilt cover as my old ones are, well old, and wouldn't coordinate with the curtains (Is that sad that I like them to complement each other?) and I am going to order the quilt and new lamps too.

I've cleared some of the clutter out and like it looking cleaner and more open. Once the TV has been moved I can do something with the chest of drawers to make it more attractive.

I got new pillows too so that should be interesting to see if that helps with my neck problems I've been having.

if you have problems with your neck might i suggest this? Organic Japanese Buckwheet Pillow?

I just bought one for myself for several reasons... i prefer reallysturdy pillows, and i always tend to get crick in my neck if i sleep wrong.

this is supposed to be good for wicking away moisture when you sleep, keeping your head cool, and its sturdy, and extremely theraputic to your neck and back. read the reviews on this.

    I love mine!

and they can have pillows menat to fit your cases... from travel size on up to king i believe, though i bought the queen sized one.

That looks interesting, thanks for the link. I like my pillows to be almost flat so I hate switching to a new pillow as the damn things are so puffy!

Alyss--What's your current chest of drawers made of and what does it look like. Knowing that might help us to give you some ideas of what you can do with it to make it more attractive if you want to make changes with it in the future.

SuperZ, The furniture is varnished pine. It's not particularly pretty but it suffices.

Have you thought about taking the sea theme a little further? I'm sure you could find beach-y touches to tie the painting into the room even more - a pretty jar of shells on the dresser, for example. You could sort of go "oceanside retreat" with it if you wanted. It sounds like you're making some positive and very pretty changes!

Alyss--One relatively inexpensive way to update a chest of drawers if it has knobs or drawer pulls (that are attached on the drawer and not carved into the drawer) on it is to go to hardware store and get replacement knobs or drawer pulls. Sometimes the knobs are designed for kitchen cabinets but they will work well on a chest of drawers. For instance you could get some brushed brass ones or brushed pewter-looking ones.
  • Alyss said on Jan 05, 2008....
    Thanks infernal, that's a nice idea. ;-)

Z, I am thinking of getting a pretty table runner to make it more attractive. The idea about the knobs is a good one too. Thank you.

The TV has gone from my room and is now set up elsewhere but my goodness the dust I encountered in the process of the rearrange!

So you want to do another bedroom make over?  Mine is all flowered and frilly and really needs it?  All it has are an 1880's brass bed and a couple teak dressers?

A friend of mine recommended that I replace my wardrobe doors, so I did and it made a nice change to the look of my bedroom. Cost me about £500. That with a lick of paint did the trick for me! I got my doors from a company called Doors Sincerely but there were loads of different companies offering the same thing on the web.

Now I just have the rest of my house to worry about lol ;)!! I should be finished in about 25 years.

It is done, for now until I can properly redecorate. The quilt is gorgeous and has helped keep me warm in the recent cold snap. I have curled up against the cushions and generally chilled out in my space and I am happy with the result.

racer, what kind of theme/look do you have in mind? I'm guessing that oriental flowers is not the way you'd want to go?

    caines, thanks for the suggestion.
