While I was in the mountains I had time to watch a little TV in the hotel before catching the cable car back down. I caught the story on the news about the assassination of the opposition leader of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto. After hearing comments from some prominent figures in the Pakistani government, President Bush’s comments were aired in brief, just two sentences.
He said that she (Bhutto) knew that going back to her home country would possibly be life-threatening. Then he said, “However, she refused to let us dictate the course of her country.”
Let me highlight the all important words: She refused to let us dictate the course of her country.
Pardon me if I misunderstood, because perhaps it was just another case of Bush choosing his words poorly, but since when is it up to the American government to dictate the course of any country? Last I heard, even the U.S. was not a dictatorship. So why should Bush and his gang do any dictating anywhere else.
Oh, it was probably just a poor choice of words but that Bush even thinks that the American government has to even assist or guide other nations in their political development is just ridiculous. Govern your own country, I say. That’s all you were elected to do. We don’t have a world president yet, Mr. Bush.
