As some of you may remember, I am directing a production of The Merchant of Venice. Rehearsals start next week, and I have been madly finishing my prep work. That's why I haven't been around much lately. I have been here, just not much time for commenting.
Anyhoo....Last night I was working on a scene and was struck, once again, by his amazing wordcraft. I just had to share it!
This is fom the "trial scene". Antonio believes he is about to be killed by Shylock's taking of his "pound of flesh". He is saying good-bye to his best friend (unrequited love??), Bassanio.
Commend me to your honourable wife:
Tell her the process of Antonio's end;
Say how I loved you, speak me fair in death;
And, when the tale is told, bid her be judge
Whether Bassanio had not once a love.
Wow! When I am shuffling off this mortal coil....years from now, hopefully.....I hope I have breath enough to say: "Speak me fair in death". Nice huh?
So do you have a favourite Shakespeare quote? Are you a "Shakespeare Geek" like me, or do you only remember him vaguely from high school?
