As some of you may remember, I am directing a production of The Merchant of Venice.  Rehearsals start next week, and I have been madly finishing my prep work.  That's why I haven't been around much lately.  I have been here, just not much time for commenting.

Anyhoo....Last night I was working on a scene and was struck, once again, by his amazing wordcraft.  I just had to share it!

This is fom the "trial scene".  Antonio believes he is about to be killed by Shylock's taking of his "pound of flesh".  He is saying good-bye to his best friend (unrequited love??), Bassanio.

Commend me to your honourable wife:
Tell her the process of Antonio's end;
Say how I loved you, speak me fair in death;
And, when the tale is told, bid her be judge
Whether Bassanio had not once a love.

Wow!  When I am shuffling off this mortal coil....years from now, hopefully.....I hope I have breath enough to say:  "Speak me fair in death". Nice huh?

So do you have a favourite Shakespeare quote?  Are you a "Shakespeare Geek" like me, or do you only remember him vaguely from high school?

Happy New Year to you too Queenie!  Thanks for stopping by!

I always enjoyed Shakespeare, but it's been so long since I've actually read any of it, I can't quote it! The only quotes I really remember are from Romeo and Juliet. In high school, I was in Midsummer Nights Dream, but I don't remember any of the lines anymore!

Good luck with your play and happy new year!

Happy New Year Kyle!  What part did you play in Dream?

Happy New Year skald!  I hope you get to have the bonfire!

Actor, I was Puck! It was a fun part. I remember that much. It was the part everyone else wanted, so I was pretty happy when I got it.

What a great part Kyle!  There is a group in Toronto that does Dream outdoors every summer in the park at dusk.  I have seen it like 4 times. It's magical!

I would love to see Dream outside in a park... but we don't have a lot of that kind of thing where I live!!
ET: I would have wanted the Puck role too...:)
  • Actorguy said on Dec 31, 2007....
Twyla: What a great quote!  I haven't read Julius Caesar in years.  I'll have to give it a look.

momsrock: Thanks for stopping by!  To tell the truth, Dream is not my favourite play, but it works so well outdoors! They time it so as it starts to get dark in the play, it is really getting dark!  Magical!
  • polarheart said on Dec 31, 2007....
I loved Shakespeare at school, but I can't remember many lines except the catch phrases:

Etu Brute? - (cant spell it!)

    Out, out damned spot!

Is this a knife I see before me?

Bubble, bubble toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, oh Romeo?

Well, that's my selection which I can recall right now!

    Happy New Year, Actorguy!

  • Actorguy said on Dec 31, 2007....
Nothing wrong with those lines polar, they're classics!  You know, I'll bet most people know at least a line or two from Shakespeare.  That's pretty amazing considering he's 400 years old!  Happy New Year, polarheart!

"Though it not be written down,  ........."
Do I have that right?  If you know the line - no need to finish it.
  • Actorguy said on Dec 31, 2007....
But, masters, remember that I am an ass; though it not be written down, yet forget not that I am an ass.

I knew it was something about being an ass, but I had to cheat to get the exact wording.  I thought it was "Bottom" from Dream, but in fact its Much Ado About Nothing.

And don't get me started on Hamlet!!!!!
Hey you should check this out Actor, it's a hoot!
  • fearing said on Dec 31, 2007....
That's it Actorguy!  lol!  I love Much Ado.  Have you ever seen the Reduced Shakespeare Company?
  • Actorguy said on Dec 31, 2007....
pickers: that site was a scream!  Wherea do find this stuff LOL

fearing:  I have heard of them but never seen them.  Are they good?
  • fearing said on Dec 31, 2007....
Actorguy - Your goal for 2008 should be to see them or at least get a copy of a dvd.  Funniest thing I've seen in a while.

I think I am becoming a Shakepeare "geek" only just since I took a Shakepeare course in November..... I feel less intimidated now...& also got myself a lexicon to look up words...which helps. Since then, I finished the Scottish Play and yesterday just finished 'Merry Wives'...(needed somehing light after the previous). I  always 'binge read' on holidays!!....so I am also enjoying a book by James Shapiro "A Year in the Life of Shakepeare -1599" which I am really enjoying and really helps put some of his plays in context...wow!
I don't  have a favourite phrase/quote yet....but I am amazed at how many cliches and so called modern sayings I am discovering actually stem from a Shakepeare play....wish I had more time to read like this all the time...it has been such a luxury to finish a couple of books/plays.....'break a leg' with your play (is that from Shakepeare?) and Happy New Year!
  • Actorguy said on Dec 31, 2007....
fearing: Okay, I googled them and I am familiar with The Complete Works of Wllm Shakespeare (abridged). I have read it, but never seen it.....hilarious!  I will try and hunt down a DVD.

liveinthemoment: Have you seen Shakespeare in Love?  It is a really good look, IMHO, about what life must have been like in Shakespeare's day.  It's also a great movie!
  • crybabylu said on Dec 31, 2007....

  • silverwhisper said on Jan 01, 2008....
i do like that quotation--thank you, actorguy, i'd forgotten that one.

my own personal fave is the crispin's day speech in henry v. it's so powerfully stirring!

  • pickersplock said on Jan 01, 2008....

    How's this one, Actor?
  • Actorguy said on Jan 01, 2008....

silver: the Crispens Day speech is amazing!  If you've ever seen the movie Rennaisance Man, there is a scene where one of the soldiers recites it in the pouring rain.  It is incredible!

pickers: that was funny!  I remember an episode of "The Blue Collar Comedy Tour" where Larry the Cable Guy does something similar.  Hilarious!

  • Actorguy said on Jan 01, 2008....
crybabylu: I forgot you sweetie! Thanks!

hiya :-)  hows the rehearsals going??
I am a wanna be shakespear fan! :-)  I never took much notice in high school, but now its something I wish I knew more about... been meaning to brush up my knowledge on it for a few years now but I just never get round to it! :-)
I will one day, be an expert!!  lol  :-)  xx
  • Actorguy said on Jan 11, 2008....
Destiny: we have just finished our first week of rehearsals and its looking very good. I think I have a great cast and everyone seems excited.  Merchant is a monster of a show!  Much more complex than than the other two I directed (Comedy of Errors and The Taming of the Shrew), but I have great people behind me and I'm excited about it.

Get reading that Shakespeare!  The more you read it, the easier it becomes and the more you'll come to love it.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 11, 2008....
    i'm glad that it's going well! :>

"Out, out damned Spot!"  I think that was Lady MacBeth shooing the dog out of the house.
  • Actorguy said on Jan 13, 2008....
silver: so far so good!  I've been spending so many months alone with this play that its great to have some people to talk about it with.  One of these days I'll find the time to blog about it.

kruuyai: Thanks for dropping by!  I'll bet it was that damned dog that drove the MacBeth's crazy :-P

glad rehearsals are going well, when does the show start? hope ya well xx
