the mrs and i live only around 1.5 hours or so away from our respective parents, whose homes are only 20 mins apart. as i believe i've mentioned a few times in the past, we generally spend holidays with both families. in that regard, we're very, very lucky--i know most families don't have that luxury.
well, in the past few years it's become our custom to spend the evening of christmas eve and christmas night at a hotel equidistant b/n both houses. this is for several reasons: i don't feel comfortable sleeping in her parents' house, she doesn't feel comfortable sleeping in my parents' house, neither of us are big fans of the ensuing wackiness that results from waking up in either house, etc.
now, in the past 2 years, we've learned that the hotel has 2 jacuzzi rooms available and each of the past 2 years, we got bumped up to it w/out paying extra. so i was kinda looking forward to the prospect of possibly soaking in the jacuzzi both nights this year, i'll confess, and we already had a bottle of wine ready to go. and b/c we checked in early (and by early, i mean like 1:30 pm!) we figured we'd have the chance to get the room. it seemed a pretty reasonable thing to think, no?
well, when we did check in christmas eve, we were informed that neither jacuzzi room was available, unfortunately, but if we checked back with the front desk christmas day after check-out (noon), they would see what they could do.
the problem: we weren't gonna be anywhere near the hotel and would in fact be tied up at my parents' place at that time, so even if a room was available, we wouldn't have been able to get to the hotel and move our stuff.
so sadly, there was no jacuzzi room at the inn for us. the mrs was a bit bummed, but she wasn't really counting on it, so i guess that's OK.
it would have been a nice way for her to recover from the mad christmas cookie baking marathon she does. i forget the numbers, but it's a lot! she always makes up platters for my sister (who lives alone and is an instructor at a college in NY state), her brother and his family, both sets of parents, and for church on christmas sunday--it's a tradition that she does makes cookies for the fellowship period after christmas sunday worship for going on 20 years or so, i believe.
now, i don't know about you guys, but do you find that hotel beds make you wanna...put those beds to the test, as it were? :D well, we were so damned tired both nights that we just went to sleep! i feel kinda lame for being so tired, but i figure that if we both were, it's better that we just go to sleep rather than force it, you know?
o, one more thing about the hotel: all right, as most of you guys know, i'm a complete and total slave to my stomach, so if i'm not fed, i get a bit cranky, and if there's bad food, that just makes me crankier!
well, wednesday morning, we woke up early so we had time to partake of the complimentary continental breakfast the hotel provides. i'm usually really fastidious about being showered and stuff before i start my day but i was so darned hungry that i didn't feel like waiting until after we were clean to have breakfast.
so the hotel put out bagels, danishes, other pastries, and a bunch of other stuff--a whole lot more food than you'd expect from the words "continental breakfast", so that was cool.
but there was this pan of scrambled eggs, and i swear, these were the most not-egg-like eggs i've ever seen! the mrs thinks that they were powdered eggs, which might very well be the case, but i tell ya, these scrambled eggs didn't taste like anything! and the consistency--wow, if i didn't see them next to the sausage or biscuits, i'd swear i was eating tofu!
now, i like tofu (as a side dish, for dinner) but good gravy, not for breakfast! ugh!
OK, i think i'm done whining about it. :>
that said: dang, those biscuits were pretty good at least. :> my tummy was pretty happy with those... :D
we got home around 11 am (didn't take long to get home) and have been relaxing ever since b/c the past few days have been incredibly hectic. and b/c we didn't really get a chance to do so, we opened up a bottle (wine bottle-sized) of this really nifty beer by dogfish head, which is based on some recently-discovered beer recipe found by chinese archaeologists. supposedly, it's the oldest known beer recipe in the world and you know, it was pretty tasty. i'm not sure it's worth the price, but hey, who knew that chinese beer could be any good?!
anyway...so that's what the past few days have been like, in broad strokes. damn but it's nice to be home. :>
