the mrs and i live only around 1.5 hours or so away from our respective parents, whose homes are only 20 mins apart. as i believe i've mentioned a few times in the past, we generally spend holidays with both families. in that regard, we're very, very lucky--i know most families don't have that luxury.

well, in the past few years it's become our custom to spend the evening of christmas eve and christmas night at a hotel equidistant b/n both houses. this is for several reasons: i don't feel comfortable sleeping in her parents' house, she doesn't feel comfortable sleeping in my parents' house, neither of us are big fans of the ensuing wackiness that results from waking up in either house, etc.

now, in the past 2 years, we've learned that the hotel has 2 jacuzzi rooms available and each of the past 2 years, we got bumped up to it w/out paying extra. so i was kinda looking forward to the prospect of possibly soaking in the jacuzzi both nights this year, i'll confess, and we already had a bottle of wine ready to go. and b/c we checked in early (and by early, i mean like 1:30 pm!) we figured we'd have the chance to get the room. it seemed a pretty reasonable thing to think, no?

well, when we did check in christmas eve, we were informed that neither jacuzzi room was available, unfortunately, but if we checked back with the front desk christmas day after check-out (noon), they would see what they could do.

the problem: we weren't gonna be anywhere near the hotel and would in fact be tied up at my parents' place at that time, so even if a room was available, we wouldn't have been able to get to the hotel and move our stuff.

so sadly, there was no jacuzzi room at the inn for us. the mrs was a bit bummed, but she wasn't really counting on it, so i guess that's OK.

it would have been a nice way for her to recover from the mad christmas cookie baking marathon she does. i forget the numbers, but it's a lot! she always makes up platters for my sister (who lives alone and is an instructor at a college in NY state), her brother and his family, both sets of parents, and for church on christmas sunday--it's a tradition that she does makes cookies for the fellowship period after christmas sunday worship for going on 20 years or so, i believe.

now, i don't know about you guys, but do you find that hotel beds make you wanna...put those beds to the test, as it were? :D well, we were so damned tired both nights that we just went to sleep! i feel kinda lame for being so tired, but i figure that if we both were, it's better that we just go to sleep rather than force it, you know?

o, one more thing about the hotel: all right, as most of you guys know, i'm a complete and total slave to my stomach, so if i'm not fed, i get a bit cranky, and if there's bad food, that just makes me crankier!

well, wednesday morning, we woke up early so we had time to partake of the complimentary continental breakfast the hotel provides. i'm usually really fastidious about being showered and stuff before i start my day but i was so darned hungry that i didn't feel like waiting until after we were clean to have breakfast.

so the hotel put out bagels, danishes, other pastries, and a bunch of other stuff--a whole lot more food than you'd expect from the words "continental breakfast", so that was cool.

but there was this pan of scrambled eggs, and i swear, these were the most not-egg-like eggs i've ever seen! the mrs thinks that they were powdered eggs, which might very well be the case, but i tell ya, these scrambled eggs didn't taste like anything! and the consistency--wow, if i didn't see them next to the sausage or biscuits, i'd swear i was eating tofu!

now, i like tofu (as a side dish, for dinner) but good gravy, not for breakfast! ugh!

OK, i think i'm done whining about it. :>

that said: dang, those biscuits were pretty good at least. :> my tummy was pretty happy with those... :D

we got home around 11 am (didn't take long to get home) and have been relaxing ever since b/c the past few days have been incredibly hectic. and b/c we didn't really get a chance to do so, we opened up a bottle (wine bottle-sized) of this really nifty beer by dogfish head, which is based on some recently-discovered beer recipe found by chinese archaeologists. supposedly, it's the oldest known beer recipe in the world and you know, it was pretty tasty. i'm not sure it's worth the price, but hey, who knew that chinese beer could be any good?!

anyway...so that's what the past few days have been like, in broad strokes. damn but it's nice to be home. :>

I recently mentioned to my husband that I wished we had a reason to stay in a hotel room so we could, as you put it, "put those beds to the test."

And now, seeing as how it's 3:49 am here, I suppose I should be putting my own bed to the test!

How disjointed a reply can I make?

Those eggs sound like quite an experience! (Eww!) That's cool that they had more than just a half a stale bagel and some off-brand cereal for breakfast though, which has been my more typical experience with continental breakfasts.

I know exactly what you mean about hotel beds. :-D Gosh knows I know what it's like to be so tired that a good opportunity just isn't, though. Sorry you didn't get a jacuzzi room.

I have another friend who does crazy cookie baking around Christmas, and it's absolutely stunning to have some idea of the volume of what she produces. They look cute, too! What kinds does the Mrs. make?

Oh yeah...yay for biscuits. :-D Any breakfast isn't that bad if there are good biscuits involved! :) And Chinese beer sounds funny...though I still think "good" and "beer" just don't belong together.

Sorry you missed out on the jacuzzi and were too tired to test out the hotel bed springs too! :-P Ah well. Usually hotel beds are so uncomfortable, the only thing they're really good for is having fun and not actually sleeping. But if everyone is exhausted, they're pretty comfortable.

I'm glad you had such a nice holiday though. And that beer sounds interesting! It's good to see you back around here :-)

moon: i'm not fully back yet. i'm waging a losing battle against sleep deprivation and a hangover today but tomorrow it's back to database work...

infernal: yeah, breakfast was weird! and yeah, i figured you & mr. infernal were inveterate bed testers somehow... :D the chinese beer was nifty, and you know up until 3 years ago i'd have agreed w/ you re: beer. but then i went to this microbrewery nearby and ever since... :>

kyle: see, the bed was actually pretty comfy, and seriously, i think it's one of the signs that you're getting older when "too tired to have sex" is actually something that happens to you! it's good to be back here, although as i mentioned to moon, i'm not really back just yet, unfortunately. the beer was definitely pretty interesting, though--if you ever check it out, let me know. it's sorta like a hefeweizen.

Staying in a hotel when visiting family is the sanest thing in the world.  Too bad about not getting the jaccuzzi room.  My personal favorite when staying in a hotel is room service.  I'm a sucker for a late night snack rolling into my room.  I don't care if I could have gotten it cheaper if I went out.  I got to have it without changing out of my fluffy robe.

Heh...reminds me of the time I made the mistake of asking for scrambled eggs at the hospital...eww.  A solid rectangle of yellow something-or-other.  Might have been a marinated sponge.

I love staying in hotels.  I think it goes back to when I was a kid and we didn't have cable or air conditioning in the car, so I loved going into a freezing cold room, flopping on the bed and watching TV; I felt so special like I was really rich or something!  Even though I now have better channel selection at home than in the hotel, it still feels so cool.  And hotel "bed testing" is the best!  Except like in your case when everyone is too tired.  Happened to me the last time I went anywhere too - bummer!

I can't believe your wife makes all those cookies.  Me, it's 3:30 in the afternoon and I've been putting off cooking dinner all day! (I usually cook in the afternoon and then reheat; saves me having to cook at the end of the day when I'm tired and he's cranky and then we just end up ordering out, blowing our budget and our diets!)
  • polarheart said on Dec 27, 2007....
Ed, I just have one thing to say: you dont need to necessarily "test" the hotel beds at night (doofie) -  -  -  there is always the Morning! (Tadaa!)
  • silverwhisper said on Dec 27, 2007....
nyt: yeesh, i know what you mean about hospital food--ew! i have similar recollections of being in the car as a kid--we had AC but it was never on strong enough for me. :D

    making dinner early and then reheating it--now that's a time-saver i hadn't thought of!

polar: well, that's kinda contingent upon the mrs liking morning romps, which sad to say, she doesn't. ah, well. :>

surprisingly enough, i can actually relate to that story, haha. excepttt:

    - we did get a jacuzzi ^.^
    - i was violently ill, which sucked, so we ended up watching borat...
    - later on, i felt better, so it was all good.

you wouldn't believe how ridiculously difficult it is to rent a hotel room under 21...ha...much less one with a jacuzzi

sorry about your shitty breakfast but hey, at least you are home. minor setback, hmm?

trav: i'm back for now, but don't really expect to be back until late next week, to be honest.
