I ran across an old yearbook that reminded me I was a queen candidate for our Christmas Ball dance when I was a senior in high school. I was not crowned queen, but the proof in the yearbook before me was that I looked pretty darned good.  I had on a black velvet suit with a frilly wine colored blouse.  I had a Farrah hairstyle, but it really didn't look too bad.

My worst fear was that I would win and have to kiss the boy crowned king.  I wasn't exactly crushing on any of the three king candidates.  I was nervous throughout the whole dance.  I didn't go with a date.  I felt sort of out of place.  Back in those days, you didn't go to dances alone.  It was kind of a taboo thing at my school.  Girls without boyfriends, like me, stayed home.

That year I was also a queen candidate for the FFA (Future Farmers of America) barn warming.  I didn't win that one either.  It was a big square dance and chili supper event.  I got to wear jeans and a nice blouse to that.  I didn't look so bad in that photo either.

I was always curvier than my friends back then.  I equated that to being fat.  I would love to look like that now.  I wasn't fat. I was shapely.  It was a different time in our culture.  Thin was in.  Twiggy, I was not.  I found no middle ground....at least I allowed none for myself.

Back then, I didn't realize I had any popularity in school.  I must have had a teeny bit though if I got nominated as a queen candidate twice that year.  I saw myself as simply a shy bookworm. It's funny how the years give you a different perspective.

Were you ever royalty at a high school event?

No, I don't think I ever was.  I had friends, but I was always "one of the guys".  I was very involved with the artsy-fartsy crowd -- music, theater and that sort of thing.  Outwardly we all would have disdained being homecoming queen candidate or whatever, but inwardly... well, you know teenage girls... We all wonder and dream what it would be like to be "royalty".  I like that term, by the way.  It surely fits, doesn't it?
  • lfbno7 said on Dec 26, 2007....
Well I think you should demand a recount. It sounds like corruption to me, and I suspect that the voting was rigged.

When I was in high school none of the girls even talked to me. I have often wondered why that was, why I was utterly ignored by girls in my school, but I have since come to the conclusion that it probably had nothing to do with me, since it was an all boys school.
  • lampshade said on Dec 26, 2007....
Not even close, for me.  I don't think I ever went to a single school event or dance.  If I ever got voted for something, I would have just assumed it was a practical joke.
  • Racerboy said on Dec 26, 2007....
Never a candidate for anything.  I was invisible pretty much in HS.  I don't even show up in the photos of things I was in.

oh of course! I was a cheerleader and had a whole boat load of jock friends. But I also had close friends in our biker crowd...and by the end of senior year I had close friends in every crowd. I had a blast and still run into people from back in the day! Our class still has reunions and parties because we really clicked! So to answer your question, I think I was royalty in my own mind at every event! :))

PS my dress was a hit last night at Christmas dinner...this time with a royal blue t-neck and black tights with funky flats by Madden girl...I am tellin g you this dress gets rave reviews everywhere I go in it! My nephew (20 y.o.) said: wow, aunt mamie where'd you get the funky dress?????

well high school was six years ago and i think i'm not really a royalty at school. i had many friends though. i was the fat everyboy's friend. i had friends in all the clicks in school. well that made me popular but not a royalty. =)

    Mimi,
I think I consider it more of an honor now than I did back then.  I would love to hear more about your artsy days.  :-)

    lfb,
That's got to be the reason I didn't win.  :-)  I just love your sense of humor.  I'm sorry you couldn't find a girl at the all boys school.  :-D

    lampshade,
High school wasn't easy socially for a lot of us.  I didn't really start to come out of my shell until college.

    Racer,
That's pretty funny.  Maybe those photos were developed with invisible ink.  :-)

    Mamie,
I'm not surprised you were friends with everyone.  :-)  You have a very giving spirit.

You know, I've told people about how much you love that little AVON dress.  I have one person who is very interested in the Mark line as a result.  I'm so glad you like it and are enjoying it.  :-D  Thank you.

    queen,
You aren't fat.  I've seen your photos.  You are a very beautiful young woman.  Try to love yourself more.  :-)  You sound a little like me that way when I was young.  I look back now and see that my view of my body was wrong.  Just something to think about.

I was never the Prom King or anything like that. Far from it! I wasn't really popular in high school, and I didn't play sports, so there was just no way I'd ever be elected to something like that. But I was however on the Student Council.

I actually won a school election to be the representative for my sophomore class. To this day, I think my friends must have stuffed the ballot box because I only ran as a joke! I was up against all these popular kids, and I have no idea how I won. But I did! I had no real interest in student government either. But it ended up being fun anyway. It was my fifteen minutes of high school fame.

I went to parochial schools through high school so we didn't have any dances.  The closest we came was banquets.  I was never in the popular kids crowd, always lurking somewhere between nerds and invisable.  I had a hand full of friends who also tended to blend in well with the crowd.  We were sort of fine arts geeks because most of us either sang in honors choir, played in honors band or were just incredibly artistic. (music for me, not art)

I look back at pictures now and think "Hey, I was cute back then" but somehow it never translated into popularity.
  • CreativeWoman said on Dec 26, 2007....
    Kyle,
I wasn't on the student council, but I was senior class vice president.  Now that I think about it, I was always an officer in the clubs I was in.  I always assumed it was because other people didn't want to do the work and they knew I would.  It's funny how your mind thinks when you are young.  I never once considered it was because I was liked.  I'm glad you had fun on the student council.

    UI,
I was kind of on the fringe of high school society too.  I was sort of somewhere in the middle.  I could be friends with most people.  I wasn't part of the click scene.  I was extremely shy and made good grades.  I was the quiet, pleasant one in the corner.

What kind of music were you in to?  Vocal?  Instrumental?

I was never a cheerleader either.  I was very involved in class projects and things like that.  I grew up in a small town. I suppose it was easier to get noticed.

The rest of the kids at your school missed out.  I think you are great. :-)

I was in FHA too.  I was an officer for three years.  President my senior year.  I ran for a regional office, but didn't win. I wasn't in band, but I had a hand in other school things. I was the driving force behind several school projects.  There is still a mural of the school mascot in the high school gym that I helped to arrange and paint.  :-)  Things like that.

CW - I did choir for 2 years and band for 4 in high school.  I played flute for 3 years and alto sax my senior year to help balance out the band.  I also took piano lessons for a bunch of years.  Do I do any of that now?  Nah.  Somehow life got busy, but music was a wonderful outlet for me in school.

UI~ you Sound like my Angela hehe she played french horn 5th 6th then  7th grade trombone to help balance the band and so her sister could Conduct High school band as she was Drum Major her Jr & Sr Yr. she went to a private music school her 8th gr yr and learned Piano. chello violin { small town school politics...helped this decision, & an Algebra teacher that just could not understand she just wasn't getting it the way he explained it.. she is still an A student in All Math  now)   Freshman & sophmore played trombone Jr year  drum Major  played Baritone..Sr now plays trumpet and Drum major..... (Still dealing with small town school politics) But hey shes a trooper!!!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Dec 26, 2007....
CW - I haven't but I've always believed that any instrument you learn (by any means) helps round you out as a person.  You should give it a try.  I required both kids to do choir at least one year and now my daughter is following my footsteps with clarinet and choir.

waking - I'd say your Angela sounds like she's a lot more talented than I was.  I've learned to play a handfull of instruments, but mostly it was because growing up in a small town leaves you lots of time to do that.
  • wakingharmony said on Dec 26, 2007....

Nope I was not royalty. I was the anti-prom king. I was very popular in my little clique of friends. But to the rest of the school I was nothing special.

I was happy with that though because I was a rebel. I didn't want to conform to their standards of coolness. I wanted to be the opposite.

I was voted most likely to end up being arrested in the senior edition of our school newspaper. That was a high honor. Not. I got a good laugh out of it though.

For the record, I've never been arrested. I've never even gotten a traffic ticket which is astounding. I'm a good rebel.

This is funny to me as I was voted "the most changed" at my 20th year reunion.

No one even knew who I was when I showed up.

I was never "royalty" in high school, but I certainly was talked about alot....

And, guess what?  I went places.  And I changed.

    And I am still changing.

no, see, the nominations at my school are kinda messed up. everyone goes to homeroom and gets a list of every girl in their grade, circles a name, and hands it in. that's how the homecoming court is selected. for queen, you have to vote on one of four girls nominated with the most votes. i have no clue how guys are chosen. we don't have a prom king or queen though, which i think is pretty cool. the movies overdramatize 'high school royalty,' i think. all the courts get to do is walk in front of eveyone at a pep rally with a bouquet and a pretty dress. that's not a big deal, in my opinion. so no, i haven't, but no regrets.

The closest I got was when I was a school candidate for Fair Queen.  10 girls in the entire county got to vie for that "honor".  I didn't win.

I was a weird combination of band geek and jockette and I joined almost every club at school.  I was well-known in the school and community, but I wouldn't say I was popular. I went to a really small school. too. Graduating class had 50-ish members.

No hs royalty here! The thought made me laugh though. :-D

I was in concert choir, and that and academic stuff is all I stood out for. I was voted "most likely to succeed" senior year, which shocked the hell out of me at our senior luau since I didn't end up placing in the top two slots academically when all was said and done (thank goodness - I would never have been able to give a speech!). There wasn't any real popularity on my part, and I wouldn't have wanted it.
