Any of you who have been following my blog of late, may have noticed some changes I've been going through. I have been working very hard at being more open, more considerate, more outgoing. I have been striving to make new friends, and better my relationships with the friends that I already have. And I've been making great strides in that area.

UNTIL

Last weekend I caught a virus. Nothing special about it, just your regular old run of the mill kick your ass put you in bed for three days virus, and it sat nicely in my chest for four days. Then on Tuesday night, it decided to migrate up to my head. So I've spent the last two days with a head full of stuffing and sinuses on fire.

Now, what does this have to do with the price of eggs in Aunt Hattie's cow?

Well, I'll tell you. For one thing, as most of you know, when a person has a virus, it causes them to be depressed. When it's a head cold, the conversation engine shuts down, and thinking quickly on your feet, being cheerful, and being spontaneous is not possible.

So.

Today was the Christmas open house for my office. All the other offices of all 9 floors of my building were invited. There were probably 300 people moving their way through my office in a two hour period, about a third of them women. Many of the people were of management level. So there I was, this totally new, fun, interesting person, amongst all of these people, and I had such a headache I could barely think! What a perfect opportunity it was for me to make new friends, meet new people, and increase my network, and I couldn't even come up with enough conversation to say my name. My mood was so glum because of my illness, that I didn't even stay in the main room. I only talked to a few people that I already knew, and most of the time I hung out in the cubicle of one of my work friends, talking to her about movies and such.

I am so pissed I could SCREAM! The best opportunity I've had to try out my new, improved social skills, and they're totally blunted by a damn VIRUS!!!!! WHY???? WHY??? WHY?????

I can only hope this virus goes away very soon, because I remember being like this at parties before, but the difference is, this time, i DIDN'T LIKE IT!!!!!

poor poor Trav! dont you just wish you could rewind and do things different? i am sure there will be other opportunities, and at least, if nothing else, you showed your face? People will recognise you in the elevator enough to say hi and maybe that could spark a conversation?

    Hang in there Trav

Anybody who misses this kind of unique humor is the one to be pitied...

So sorry you are not feeling well, but don't give up just yet.  You have a personality worth considering at the 4-way stop.

Feel better soon, and go out and wow 'em next time you get a chance!
  • travelr712 said on Dec 20, 2007....
yeah pdq, i'll have more opportunities, so i'm not gonna let it get to me. and don't worry about the double click, it happens to all of us from time to time.

pickers - thank you. so do i :-)

wombie - you actually like my jokes? one of my signature statements is 'so few people appreciate the subtleties of my humor'! so thank you for that :-) LOL, i like yours too! and next time, i will wow them, at least i hope so!

That sucks. I'm sorry you had such a bad headache. That's kind of how I felt at our Christmas party last week too. I wasn't much fun because I felt like crap. But I'm sure you'll get another opportunity to mingle with everyone :-) How's your head now?

Look at the bright side. Your social skills definitely would have alienated everyone in the room and cost you your job and gotten you too deeply involved with an absolute whacko, so your virus saved you from so much grief.

You have my sympathy. I ought to be attending my work Christmas function today but since I am sick as a dog I won't be going. =(
  • travelr712 said on Dec 21, 2007....
well, i just saw that sc ate my comment from last night and i hadn't noticed! it was a good one too! i wish i could remember it!

nurse - i took some advil and theraflu last night, it helped me to get some actual sleep. i didn't want to get up this morning!

et - yeah, i remember you wrote that you were sick, it sucks, doesn't it? but i'm feeling better today.

wombie - everyone i have ever known has labeled me with wierd, odd, different, strange, even enigma, so i think you and i should start a club. maybe oddfellows? oh wait, there's already one of those! well, i've learned to accept that oddness and use it, and i'm much better off for that.

lucy - seems like you've been feeding me quite a bit lately, huh? hey, could you email me some of that soup? and what's an ear candle?

  • travelr712 said on Dec 21, 2007....
cw - well, they didn't have anything like that this year, so i really don't know. this is the first event we've had like this. but there will be other opportunities in other places, i know.

cry - thank you. i feel better today.

lfb - god, it could have worked out so badly! i guess i should never forget to look on the dark side, huh? :-)

alyss - awwww, i'm sorry to hear that you're sick. do you usually like your company parties?
  • Mamie said on Dec 21, 2007....

aw, trav, hope you are feeling better! I had the sinus thing too! Yuck and my head was on fire too!

Ok, so people who you want to still meet...

    1. stay on the elevator all morning  *smile

    2. say 'hey did you make the party the other day?' 3. they answer yes or no, you say 'i had this sinus infection that was making my head explode. want to grab coffee sometime and I would appreciate it if you could introduce me to other fun people that I missed while I was outta commission". Tell you r boss you are late because you couldn't get off the elevator. Give your self a quota, 3 people a day...meet new ones for 5 days in a row...that is 15 new acquantances in a week!

  • Mamie said on Dec 21, 2007....
    lfb: you crack me up!!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Dec 21, 2007....
Well, I personally think you're being too hard on yourself.  If you had a huge headache I'm sure just being vertical was a challenge, much less sparkling conversation.  I'd have been tempted to be in the copy room, banging my head against the wall so that that pain was less than the headache.

Give yourself a break. (God knows few others will)  Do a little "catch up" around the office when you feel better.  Make small talk with the people you see in the hallways and elevators. (nice day, do you think the Mets will win, etc.)  Networking is all about a series of behaviors, not one occaision anyway.
  • lfbno7 said on Dec 21, 2007....
thank you. i have an odd sense of humor and try to avoid the obvious. as long as it keeps em laughing, we're good.
  • elaineandcotteralladams said on Dec 21, 2007....
Drink some of your own urine as Howard Hughes did.  It is loaded with potassium and uric acid which is good for the system.  Also, some shots of wheat grass juice in your early morning blended shake along with egg whites and tofu should help.  Don't use sugar.  It causes diabetes.  Go for some molasses instead.

*HUGS* i hope it works better next time!
  • Mr_Box said on Dec 21, 2007....

Well that bites. It always sucks to be sick. It's even worse if you're expected to be social.

I hope your head feels better soon. It probably does since I'm late reading this.

    Better luck next time, man.

  • allswell said on Dec 21, 2007....
Hey trav that sucks that that happened! Why is it that when something good or fun is supposed to happen something comes along and screws it up!! mamie - i learn so much from you! how'd you get so wise?

fallyn - thank you, i've learned that i'm pretty good at setting goals and reaching them, and that's a goal i've set for myself, so i'm going to get there.

box - hi guy! i haven't heard from you for awhile. thank you, i feel better now. pm me when you get a chance, ok?

all - hugs right back to you! you know, you're right. bad things happen to me every day. i used to focus on them allot. but i know that good things happen to me every day too. i've been focusing on those more now. it must be working, people seem to like me better :-)
