I suppose this qualifies as one of my Positive Posts.  Makes me happy anyway.  I just put a quilt on my bed, one that I made a couple years ago.  It's probably my favorite of all the quilts I've made.  My husband only likes it if he can turn it over and put the backside facing out.

It's wild with color.  I used at least a hundred different fabrics, little two-inch squares of color all sewn together.  It's a very homey-looking quilt.  Poor little orphan quilt that nobody loves but me.  And I'll tell you why.

I can look at every one of those squares and tell you something about the fabric I used.  See the light green fabric with the butterflies that look like watercolor paint?  That's from a small length of fabric that was sent to me for my birthday from a quilt guild friend.  Right next to it are two different fabrics that I used in a table runner.  I don't have it any more because I donated it to a charity auction for a little boy with cancer.  If the money it brought in made things a little easier for his family then I was happy to do it.  I know each fabric, and it makes me happy to remember each one.

(The pic is small.  I can't pick out the fabrics I was telling you about, unfortunately.)

Anyway, it looks really nice on the bed, I think.

    it's beautiful mimi.

funny thing - when my aunt passed away last spring, i took a quilt that she had that my grandma made.  it's a crochet quilt - one of those ones made with squares.
my grandma was just about blind, but she loved to crochet.
anyway, it's wild with color too....crazy yellows and pinks and blues and reds.....
i put it on my bed, and it's the warmest blanket i've ever owned.  it's HUGE and i just LOVE being under it!

Thanks Mamie, baby.  It's one quilt I won't give away because it means so much to me.  Now I made a quilt for my mom that I "tried out" all last winter.  Just so I was sure it would be a good one.  But I did finally give it to her.

Secret, it sounds wonderful.  And I bet every time you see it, you think of your grandma.  See?  A little bit of her love every time you cover yourself with it.  That's what makes it beautiful.

I love it Mimi, it is just perfect to snuggle under!  I know what you mean by knowing the fabric and a story behind a lot of it.  :)  I do the same with a lot of mine.  I have yet to make one just for myself for my bed.  I make them and give them all away...I like that. Or my small quilt group will get together and make one for a raffle or an event of some sort...that is always fun too.

Thanks, quiet.  except for two, I've given all of the ones I make away.  Both of the ones I kept aren't the prettiest ones I've done, but I love them for the memories behind them.

Oh, also I stumbled across a website you might like -- lots of good info.  www.quilterstv.com

ah Mimi, you're reminding me of a quilt I received as a wedding gift. The Mom of a good friend of mine made it. Sunbonnet Sue, I think the pattern is called - not my favourite pattern, but it was made from scraps of fabric from my friend's clothes that her Mom had made. Was a wonderful gift.

oh and don't get me started on sleeping under a quilt that my Mom made. She learned how to quilt in her 60s. I know it was as a way to leave something tangible of her with us. Now both my sons and I can cuddle under a part of her.

Mimi that must have been a lot of work. I also saw the other beautiful quilt on Flickr. You are so gifted. I never was good at sowing.

Mimi, I didn't know you made quilts... I love them!! I think it's really neat that you have a little story about each piece of fabric used. I like quilts because of all the time and effort someone put into making them and when the fabric has a history...just even more special. I think it's beautiful mimi!

Hi Mimi:  That's a lovely quilt.  It reminds me of a story about a patchwork quilt that I read when I was a little girl.  Each piece of cloth had come from some special piece of clothing in the woman's life and brought a lot of memories with it, just as you're describing here.  What a wonderful way to wrap yourself in your memories.  I turned my mom onto quilting years ago.. even though I'd never done it myself.  She's made some beautiful things, too, and I am the proud owner of one of them.  Merry Christmas, Mimi!
