Only 5 questions today. I hope you enjoy answering them. They are inspired by the fact that I am considering trying to quit smoking. Again. For the five thousandth time.

I am turning 30 tomorrow and I have been told by many people that it all goes downhill from there.

Which made me think that perhaps I shouldn't try and kill myself any faster than Mother Nature intended.

But I like smoking. I really do. I know it's disgusting and makes your clothes smell bad. But it's fun. And it's relaxing. And it's how I cope with stress.

I'm not sure how successful I'll be. And I'll just be honest and say I'm not starting today. I'm having a birthday party tonight and that's for me to enjoy. Therefore I will be smoking.

After that? Wish me luck.

1) Have you ever given up a bad habit successfully?

For example, smoking, drinking, drugs, biting your nails? And if so, how did you do it? Cold turkey, rehab, nictotine patches? (I hope no one needed rehab for biting their nails...)

2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

Yes, I've given up a few bad habits. And I did it with sheer willpower. It definitely wasn't easy, but sometimes if you REALLY want to do something bad enough, that's all it takes.

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

Sometimes I'll have a beer, then I'll let someone try and distract me. Talking it out also helps. I don't think I could meditate because my mind is way too busy to shut off.

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

Yes, I know I am. The internet and this website are two examples. But I have more too. I think I have a very addictive personality.

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

Ugh...I love to think of myself as really laid back and calm, but mostly I'm a big bundle of nerves. It sucks.

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

Avoid and hope it'll go away. That never works though.

By the way, good luck with quitting smoking again. I hope you can do it! That's one of the habits I managed to kick, but I still like doing it, as you know. But I don't think I was ever truly addicted to smoking. I only did it in certain situations, so for me it was easy to stop because I just avoided those situations. But you're right, it's disgusting and nasty, but somehow fun.

    1) Have you ever given up a bad habit successfully?

No I have not. But my only really bad habit is the smoking. I've tried the patches and the gum. Didn't work. I still wanted to smoke. I need more willpower. Or aversion therapy.

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

I smoke. I rant. I have a drink. And then I try to distract myself.

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

Yes. That's why I wrote this post.

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

I am a really calm person. But when I'm on edge, it's not a pretty sight.

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

I like to deal with it and move on. It's just better that way.

  • Mr_Box said on Dec 15, 2007....

Miss Diva.....thank you for the birthday wishes. You have a nice birthday too.

I bet you are a pretty chilled person if you have cigarettes, pot, and beer!

Have you ever tried to give any of those vices up?

Kyle.....you are a lot stronger than me when it comes to giving things up. You've given up several things, and I can't even seem to give up one.

My main motivator here is not health reasons because that has never worked in the past.

I'm just going to think about all the money I'll save because smoking is expensive.

    Maybe that will work?

  • GracefullyGrowing said on Dec 15, 2007....

    1) Have you ever given up a bad habit successfully?

Yes.  Several.  I think we all do what we WANT to do, when we want to do it.

Additionally, I once gave up smoking.  However, I did it FOR someone else, not for me.  I went back to smoking when the relationship went down the tubes - I didn't want to quit in the first place.  So, was this a success?  On the surface, no.  Underneath, yes, because it showed me I could do it if I simply wanted to.

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

All of the above.  Sex is a great stress reliever, IMO. ;~)

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

    Most certainly.  Several things.

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

Neither.  I'm not calm all the time, nor am I on edge frequently.  I so weird, I don't know how to answer this question.  =)

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

Most certainly confront it ASAP.  The only time I avoid things is when those around me insist upon it.

    ~Grace~

PS:  I half-jokingly tease that I'll quit smoking two weeks after I'm dead - so be sure to put a carton in the casket!

I used to bite my nails, but I think I just grew out of the habit......I have tried smoking, but I didn't really like it......my worst habit is probably procrastination and I haven't been able to kick that!

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

If I am really stressed out I like to take a walk or a bath and listen to music.......if I have someone to talk to about it, that helps too. If it's REALLY stressful and bad, I like to drink wine........LOL

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

    Ummm.....chocolate and coffee!!

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

I am very calm. Sometimes too calm I think........b/c when I do get upset it surprises people with how I act! LOL

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

Oh I am terrible with this.......I avoid things that scare me. So if I think the problem will turn out badly if I confront it, I will avoid it forever if I can......

Happy early birthday, Jack!!! And good luck with quitting smoking :) I think you can do it if you really want to!

    1) Have you ever given up a bad habit successfully?

yes, and successfully, but smoking is not one of them. the way i see it is, something's gonna kill you eventually, might as well be something you enjoy, right?

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

i guess a little of all of them. i usually have to get up and do something. work it off, as it were

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

well, yes, food, breathing, sleeping, those are all powerful addictions. but my drug of choice is cigarettes.

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

i'm pretty calm most of the time, but i'm also a very sensative person, so i can get pretty passionate at times.

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

i used to be an avoider. now, i tend to try and confront a problem.

happy birthday jack, and many, many returns :-)

Yes.  Gossiping.  I worked in an office once where it got way out of hand.  I vowed I would never be  part of that again when I left there.  I've stayed true to that.

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

Unfortunately, I tend to eat too much when I'm really stressed.  I'm not as bad as I used to be.  I seem to sit at the computer and blog about what is stressing me.  It helps.  I also withdraw and get very quiet.

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

    Yes

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

Outwardly, I am calm.  Inside I am a wreck a lot of the time.

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

In all honesty, I am probably a combination of the two.

Grace.....I think you are absolutely right that quitting something is easy when you actually want to do it. Maybe I just haven't wanted it yet? Something to think about.

Miss Natty......taking a walk or a bath is such a good way to deal with stress. I'd probably pick the wine first myself.

And thank you for the birthday wishes. I'll be seeing you later tonight.

Travelr.....I don't think you can call food and breathing addictions. Those are life sustaining functions.

An addiction would be something you could definitely live without, but you just don't want to. Cigarrettes fit the bill.

And thanks for the birthday wishes.

Ms. CW........gossiping can be a hard thing to stop doing. Especially if the people around you keep getting into trouble or interesting situations that warrant some gossip.

Good for you for being able to curb that urge.

  • travelr712 said on Dec 15, 2007....
well mr box, i do tend to define things differently than most other people, it's one of my particular 'wierdnesses' :-)
  • Mr_Box said on Dec 15, 2007....

I guess I was simply using the standard definition of addiction.

Which would be a compulsion to do something that may have negative consequences on your life.

To avoid eating and sleeping and breathing would actually make you dead.

So that's usually the outcome one tries to avoid by kicking their addictions.

  • gingersoul said on Dec 15, 2007....

    1) Have you ever given up a bad habit successfully? Yes, i quit cold turkey smoking 15 years ago. And never touched a cigarette since.  But it worked only because i decided it was time to let it go and my body evidently was reacting to the nicotine.

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction? I usually watch a movie, i do crosswords, if i have time i go to the gym or walk the dog. I tend to forget eating when i am stressed.

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything? Oh, yes....Soulcast....lol....procrastination......chocolate......coffee in the morning....a certain sexual habit i am not going to reveal here....:-)

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge? I am pretty calm....i start to feel agitated when i am stressed or job deadlines push me over the limits......at the same time i have very little patience and sometimes i am short tempered specially when i drive and people acts nuts around me....

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away? It depends by what kind of problem........if its a relationship issue (friends or partner, it doesnt matter) i tend to attack it like a bull.....i might not verbalize immediately the core of the problem but i am certainly not blind about it....If its a practical problem that implies decisions, plans, actions i admit i tend to procrastinate in dealing with it.....did you read above about the procrastination thingie?.....:-)

  • gingersoul said on Dec 15, 2007....

And...... Mr.Boxi....you didnt reveal your own addiction...the reason why you wrote the post....*wink*.....

Its only smoking or something else darker?...:-)

    Btw, again, HAPPY B-DAY!!!!!..{{hugs}}}

  • PsychoDramaQueen said on Dec 15, 2007....

Firstly Happy 30th - from experience, let me tell you, the 30s are the happening decade. I have hit my prime....so its all fun fun fun. great poll subject btw. here are my answers

    1) Have you ever given up a bad habit successfully?

I gave up my exhusband?? Cold turkey..... Seriously, I used to toally binge on cakes and cookies and would freak out on getting on the scale. i would eat when stressed. I cut out cake adn cookies, got on the treadmill more often, and ignore the scale. works for me. But it takes discipline. You have to want to do it for you, not for anyone else. Because you believe its the right thing for YOU.

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

I like to meditate a little every morning, commune with my inner spirit. It relaxes me and helps restore some positive focus. (at least until the kids start hammering on my bedroom door or shoving fingers into various different sibling orifices)If it is a particularly stressful day I will try to bring my mind back to the serenity of the morning meditation. If the kids stress me in the evenings I usually give in and have a drink or three, but I am trying so hard to cut down on that.

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

my kids, procrastination (but i think thats an art not an addiction) the internet, refresh button, coffee, love, SHOES.....

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

i am always on edge, but when i have fallen over that edge i get eerily calm and the kids run for miles. I am more scary calm than on edge.

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

I am learning to confront things, but by nature I bury things 20 ft underground adn try to ignore it till it doesnt go away. I have learnt that ignorance is only blissful in the short term. things always come back to bite you on the butt if you dont face them head on.

Good luck with the quitting smoking. From what i have been given to understand, a lot of the lure of smoking is the oral fixation. SO maybe take up a new habit of cracking pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds or soemthing? Just an idea.

I know I have a food issue….stress eater….I constantly battle with it….probably because I constantly battle stress!!  Maybe I am addicted to stress?

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?  Food…exercise (thank goodness, or I’d weigh 500 lbs!!!), TV

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?  Yup….Food…TV…Diet Soda/Caffenine

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?  Hmmm….I appear calm on the outside most of the time…but inside a stress mess

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?  Problem?  What problem?  Who has a problem?  ;-)  MM

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!, 30 is very YOUNG!!!!!!!!!

    1. Have you ever given up a bad habit successfully?

I'm too old to give up my bad habits!, especially coffee.

    2. When you are stressed about something how do you calm yourself down?

When I'm stressed I go out and walk and sometimes do a "Forrest Gump Run", but in circles.

    3. Do you think you're addicted to anything?

I'm addicted to a lot of weird things, especially when I'm stressed, I like raking the leaves in my ugly yard, I can stomp on them, throw them down the hill, burn them, yada, yada, yada .........., safe way to take out my anger.

    4. Would you consider youself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

I'm usually calm, although its my husband that keeps me on the edge.

    5. If you have a problem in you're life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

I usually confront problems head on, I'm too outspoken and like to get to the bottom of things and resolve whatever issue is at hand. Right now my only problem is my marriage, something I cannot resolve  since my husband refuses to talk about it ?

I smoked for a short time when I was in college.  Until my boyfriend-now-husband put them up on a high shelf where I couldn't reach them.  Obviously I wasn't addicted.  And I used to bite my nails pretty bad.  When I was a young teenager, a neighbor lady had beautifully manicured nails that I really liked so I just stopped doing it, cold turkey.

    2) When you are stressed out about something how do you calm yourself down? Meditation? Enjoying one of your bad habits? Distraction?

Unfortunately, food is now my drug of choice to alleviate boredom, anger, sadness, or stress.

    3) Do you think you're addicted to anything?

See Answer #2.  Particularly sugar.  Unless it's a day when it's salt.

    4) Would you consider yourself a calm person or are you frequently on edge?

Calm on the outside.  I tend to hold it all inside, which is probably not the best thing to do.

    5) If you have a problem in your life are you more apt to confront it head on and deal with it, or avoid it and hope it goes away?

I am a true devotee of the ostrich-with-its-head-in-the-sand theory of conflict resolution.  Confrontation of any kind makes me very uncomfortable.

Hey, MrB, happy birthday!  Coincidentally, I'm also celebrating a thirtieth something.  Wedding anniversary.  Man, I'm old...  ;)

Happy Birthday Mr.B!!!  I can't remember - who is older you or your brother?

    1) Yes, I stopped biting my nails a looooong time ago.  I was in high school and decided one day I would stop.  No rehab.

    2) When I'm stressed I pray.

    3) I can't say that I am.  Caffeine maybe.

    4) I don't know which I am.  I think others would think I calm but the insides are a different story sometimes.

    5)  I'll have to ditto MissMimi on this one.

    4) calm-ish

    5) confront it, usually...but i've been know to wait too long to resolve it.

Gingery.....my only real addiction is the smoking. There are other things I enjoy, sometimes to excess, but smoking is the only thing I can't just stop without going crazy.

psychodramaqueen......I love that name. Very cool. You're right about the smoking being an oral fixation. It's not so much that I need the nicotine, but I'm addicted to the act of smoking.

Minnie.....a lot of people eat when they're stressed out. I'm just the opposite. I lose my appetite when things get stressful.

    Ms. CW.....thank you very much.

soleme......thanks for the birthday wishes. I suppose I'm pretty addicted to coffee too.

Miss Paranoia.......at least you don't smoke that much. That's a good thing.

Miss Mimi.......maybe if my wife hid my cigarettes someplace, I'd be less tempted? Probably not though. I'd just go out and buy more.

Thank you for the birthday wishes. And happy wedding anniversary to you!

fearing....thank you for the birthday wishes. I am the older brother, but not by much. 18 months older.

callingyou.....I'm pretty attached to my computer too. I think most of us here at this website are.
