I've been caught up in this Midwestern ice storm drama. I'm at my parents' for a few days. My home is dark. No heat. No electricity. No cell phone. My world as I know it came to a grinding hault when the ice laden trees started falling around my house yesterday.
My parents live about 40 miles from me. Thankfully, the roads had been treated well and I took the chance on making it to their home. They live in a little town of about 1400 which has its own municipal power plant and is in the process of adding a windmill farm. They are self-sufficient. The larger communities are still without power, but not my little hometown. We are safe and warm.
There are still some without heat, but local emergency management has been going to those homes, picking them up, and taking them to shelters. This is the part of small town life that I really love. It's when people take care of people. It's the kindess of the local grocer going down and opening up so that the local fireman can get food to feed those in the shelter. It's friends checking on friends...and making new friends. It's times like these that make me proud I grew up here.
I plan to stay here with a warm heart and body until my heat comes back on. That could be a few days since I'm waiting on an electric cooperative that services a wide area.
