do you have a favorite christmas or holiday song, or perhaps more importantly, a favorite version of them?

there's a version of all i want for christmas that i really dig that was featured in love, actually. i don't recall the artist, unfortunately, but it's in the climax of the story featuring liam neeson and the son of his wife/girlfriend (?). it has a really fun energy to it.

how about you?

Ed- My favorite Christmas song is Little Drummer Boy. Its not one of the jumpy, jumpy, happy tunes, but to me the most beautiful. And like memyself, I like Deck the Halls...

    Where to begin? :-D

I love Bing Crosby's "I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas." I just always have. It reminds me of everything that was good during childhood holidays.

Burl Ives singing "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas" is special to me now, for a reason I can't share here, and has been since 2005. ;-)

"Silent Night" is just a gorgeous song, especially harmonized. It reminds me of Christmas Eve services held in candlelight and hope.

"Where Are You, Christmas?" (Faith Hill) is a song I could relate to for a few years, so it's got a special place in my heart.

And, lastly, "I Wonder As I Wander"...I think I like that one so much because I hear it in my head in my dad's rich baritone voice, and the melody is just so hauntingly beautiful.

Each of those is a favorite, and I'd be hard-pressed to choose a top song from them.

I believe the song you're thinking of is "All I Want For Christmas Is You"
There are a couple of versions on the soundtrack.

Watch your messages, I'll send you a link if I can!

As for my favorites, too many too think off right off the top of my head!

I was thinking of making a post like this, but I'm glad you did first! Mine is negative anyway, I hate holiday music, just not such great memories and it constantly reminds me of that. However, the one thing I do loove is any music from the Nutcracker, so thats my favorite holiday music.

I'm not big on Bing Crosby's White Christmas, the best selling song of all time, particularly since I heard that he used to beat his kids. I can't understand that. I can't understand abusing your kids. I think Bing Crosby was a fucking asshole for beating his kids, and I'd like to kick his ass. Plus, I hate shoveling and it always makes me physically sick because I have to overdo it. I am not hoping for a white Christmas. So he had an awesome bass voice. That doesn't make him a human being.

My favorite Christmas song has got to be The Little Drummer Boy by the Harry Simeone Chorale. It's an amazing record.

In general I don't like Christmas songs because I have heard them all a thousand times and I get saturated with them. I pretty much can't stand Christmas music. The only way I like the songs is if I change the words into something completely inappropriate. Then they give me a laugh. I think that four letter words, and the MF word, go great with Christmas songs. Makes for a wonderful contrast.

I will happily walk from my car into my office building singing I'm dreaming of a white mother fucking Christmas...... just like the ones I used to know. Where the tree tops glisten, and children listen, to hear my belt crack across their fucking little tiny asses.....

I like the song 'Oh Holy Night'. It's sooo beautiful. It gives me chills every time I hear it. Especially when it's sung by a choir. That's my favorite one of all time. But for fun, I always like the Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer song......LOL I'm a little goofy b/c everyone always hates that song!

mm&i: really? not a one, huh? i guess that makes things easier, huh?

beyond: that's such a classic! and yeah, deck the halls is good stuff, too. :>

infernal: oo, good choices! i'll confess, silent night is my all-time fave. :>

CW: i'm very fond of that one, too!

TAB: thank you so much--i'm sure that's it! i'm sure i'm the only person on SC who feels this way but i'm just not that interested in TSO. i gotta be alone on that one, i figure.

mm: o wow, a judy garland fan, huh? nifty!

np: ah, the nutcracker...always a favorite, that one. sorry i beat you to the punch!

skald: i will check that youtube clip out shortly.

lbf: i'm not that big on bing crosby myself, to be honest. usually, i get sick of it at some point, then i have a "christmas moment" at some point and i'm OK.

nat: heh...do you like the usual version or the cartman version? :D

lys: hey, always good to see you, sir! carol burnett did a version?!

I have many favorite Christmas songs, but two that are my all time favorites.  O Holy Night and Ave Maria I think are absolutely beautiful and give me chills every time I hear them.  Of course, I love the regular ones as well which all remind me of my childhood and going to church during the Christmas season.

  • silverwhisper said on Dec 07, 2007....

If I'm not mistaken, the version in Love Actually is by Olivia Olson (the cute little girl who sings it in the movie).  I bought my mom the soundtrack one year.

Anyhow, I despise most Christmas music, largely because everywhere you go from November 8th or so to shortly after Christmas is filled with horrible versions of what were once tollerable, merry little songs.

But I am a sucker for "Lets Make Christmas Merry, Baby" by Amos Milburn :)

oh ed, don't mind me...just passing through...its an "age thing" LOL
  • biglove said on Dec 08, 2007....

I like that more traditional versions sung by the greats like Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Mel Torme, The Carpenters, Barbra Streisand, Burl Ives.

My favorite songs are "Carol of the Bells", Sleigh Ride, "I'll be home for Christmas", "White Christmas", "The Christmas Song" (also known as Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, written by Mel Torme) and of course the theme to Charlie Brown Christmas.
