I live on a farm near a small town of 10,000 people.  In one month we have had two murders.  Violent crime is almost unheard of here.  At least until now it was.

The first murder was a beating death.  The body was dumped behind the dumpster of a business.  The police found the suspects by tracing the blood on the street from where they dragged the body about half a block.

The second murder happened at the local Chinese restaurant the night before last.  Apparently,  an argument happened in the kitchen and one man shot another killing him.  The shooter is known but hasn't been captured.  My heart sinks because the man that died was always pleasant and smiling.

Both deaths are senseless.

I know violent crime is a fact of everyday life in many places.  Here, it never used to happen.  Many people still leave their doors unlocked.  That's going to have to change though.  As the community grows, and it is, I suppose the level of crime will too.

It's not the same as when I was a kid.  I guess being in a small town all my life has sheltered me.

I hear this a lot.  Small towns suddenly having violent crimes more frequently.  I think perhaps it's a symptom of a stressed out country.

i think it's also a function of people knowing that people go postal in other places, to be honest.

it must be a hard thing to see your home changing for the worse. :<

Before we moved up here to the northeast hometown of my hubby, he kept bragging about how "crime is almost non-existant."  He was in for a rude awakening when we got here.  Things do happen--and I still lock my doors and check my back seat before I get in my truck.  I read the online newspaper from my hometown, which is fairly small, and I am shocked at the number of murders, break-ins, drug arrests and such going on there.  Worse than here, so far, but it is still not "the nice little town" he remembers from 12 years ago.  Mayberry is a tv town.

Someone was shot dead in my basement before we owned the house. The guy broke in to the basement, a neighbor noticed and called the cops, and the cops came by and shot him.

Little towns aren't so little.  The town I grew up in now has gangs, drugs, crack houses and the like.  I still believe it is the "undesireable" element that is leaving the big cities in hopes of finding easy pickings in small communities.  They are getting run out of the big cities.  It could be stopped but that would never be allowed.

    wombat,
A person does have to be smart and wary these days.  No town is innocent anymore.

    lfb,
That would creep me out.  Does it bother you?

    Racerboy,
I think you have a valid point.  I can only speak for the town I'm near, but the drugs, etc. have taken a bigger hold than they ever have before.  Gun crimes are on the rise.

It has also sheltered me living in a country with a small population. I know what you are talking about because in this country murder is not common either. It makes you sorry that things are changing that way.

{{{{{{{{{{{{CW}}}}}}}}}}}}}} I know what you mean. Most of my life I have a small town girl and when it does strike it is like it shakes your world. Then when a murders happen in your own family...you feel less secure. The last few nights (well not last night) On HBOW they have showed "Alpha Dog" the movie about the murder of my 15 yr old cousin. it is still hard to believethat is that close. His Parents get no Money from this Movie... and because I know the real names ect it was hard for me to figure who was who and get past the shock and really see the message this movie has.. If Anyone has problems with their children or worries about them possible heading in wrong direction....I recommend sitting down with them and watching this....it seems like a typical teen violent movie but they have a very different ending. sorry pretty soon I am going to have to change my name to post hijacker..WH

    skald,
It is sad that crime is spreading so much.

    waking,
I've heard of that movie.  Isn't Justin Timberlake in it?  I'm so sorry for your loss.

By the way, I never mind when one of my posts takes on a different direction.  I like seeing where the conversation goes.  :-)

CW- I grew up in a western town of about twenty thousand and there was almost no crime. I had graduated from high school and left home before my parents locked their door. We never locked the cars either. I understand what you are going to miss.

cw - that's just awful! it's a terrible side effect of the freeing of our society from the oppressive morals of the past centuries that the freedom comes with it a price of unchecked emotions that can cause temporary or sometimes perminant insanity.

another form of this insanity is playing itself out right in our own county government. i found out today when i was working on one of the computers at the police administration building, that the county prosecutor will not take a murder case unless it is a 100% success rate, so that the stats don't spoil her numbers. she'll be able to report that during her tenure, she had a 100% success rate in prosecuting murderers in our county. the cost is that nearly half of the murder cases go unprosecuted, and the murderers go free. that is also insane.

CW, when I heard that someone was shot dead in my basement before I moved in, it didn't creep me out at all. I don't care. I know this sort of thing has to happen somewhere. There's not a lot of crime around here. The big surprise to me, coming from New York City, is that the cops actually were of some use and got the guy, the neighbors were of some use, those are the real stunners about this story.

Where I live, cops are really tough. Some of them are real bastards too. They'll nab those bad guys and kick their asses on the street if they get into a brawl. But some of them will treat the regular citizens like shit too. That "cop attitude" is pervasive everywhere. They see themselves as being against the world, like they don't come from us, they are a separate species, and they have scorn for the public.

Oh, and I'm not surprised at the Sharon Stone story above, nor do I cut her any slack for smacking a kid around. She's a nut job from way back.
