i have about ten white hairs that keep coming back.....and i was pulling them all out.
and there just seems to be more every time look

well. i have decided to stop pulling them out....and i have decided that i'm not going to dye my hair as they turn grey either.......my mother has dyed for years...and i think it just doesn't look good.....

i'm just worried i'm going to look too old.. or else really weird......cause i'm only 31. with lots of white hairs.

my guy...he's 35...and i'd say he's gone about 25% or more grey. .....he shaves his head though...so it's not really noticeable unless he hasn't gotten to it in a week or more.......it's just surprising to see all that grey......he's so young. but it looks good on him....i guess if we stay together we'll both just be young....and grey. :P oh well.

just curious.......how do you feel about aging and stopping the effects of it? any tips? good advice?

There is some miscreant lurking in my genes. My father had a grey streak right down the middle of the top of his head (Like a skunk!) from the time he was a teen to his death at age 62.  Taking after his side, I've had a grey streak two inches wide on my right temple since I was sixteen, and the rest of my hair was dark auburn.  Talk about looking weird!  A sixteen year old girl with grey hair?  Yeah.  I got teased quite a lot about that one.  I started dying my hair then, and I haven't stopped since.  I've made a vow that the day I turn 65 is the day I get to stop dying my hair. (It's a pain in the butt!)

I can't express how shocking it is to me to see a woman from behind, and she's dressed very "young", has a long stylish hair style, etc. . . and then you see her from the front, and you see. . . that face!  All wrinkles and way too over made-up!!  That's just . . . tacky.  Same goes for men.  Comb-overs and unkept moustaches/beards that are all grey, complete with nose ring and tongue stud is just . . .again, tacky.  These extremes of TRYING to look too young simply exaserbate the aging effects, IMO.

So, I guess my vote is, gracefull aging is age appropriate, and looking one's best.

i love it gracefully! that would be SOOO cool. .......my aunts and my grandma both have a streak....i think it's beautiful.

i don't know what mine will do as it turns greyer........does stress really have to do with how soon you go grey? i know my guy and i have both had WAY over stressful lives......so....i on't know.

Great different post!   The only thing I do is use non-peroxide hair color occasionally.  The thing I am most concerned about where aging is concerned is my mobility.   I hate not being able to bend down and pck up a penny and then get back up.

I see those people all the time--tying to look young with attatchments...
  • Fallyn said on Dec 03, 2007....
yeah, me too......i think as i get older though i'll use like.......face treatments and stuff.......do you know the ones i mean?
  • wombat said on Dec 03, 2007....

fallyn:  Sorry, no.  The only face treatments I use are smirking in the mirror, and then going on in to my day....
  • GracefullyGrowing said on Dec 03, 2007....
Ya gotta use those face treatments from the time you're young for them to work properly, don't cha think?
  • wombat said on Dec 03, 2007....
Most people, maybe.  I don't use anything.  Don't even wash my face at night half the time.  People think I am 20 years younger than I am.  Not bragging.  Just genetics, maybe.  Or ignorance.  I don't take pills, either.  Or go to the doctor.  I am just still who I was years ago, only can't bend down and pick up a penny as fast as I used to... ha....
  • Fallyn said on Dec 03, 2007....
wombie...people think i'm younger than i am too. ......i cannot understand at ALL the people who lie about their age.....when they are 40 and say they are 29....all it makes people do is say .....WOW>....she looks OLD for 29.

if i was gonna do anything i'd start telling people i was 40.....*grin* then they'd think i looked SUPER young!

grace, well, i guess i'd better start then huh. :P

My mother had a white streak down the middle of her head. It appeared over night after a heart attack. So, I would say that stress does play a part in grey hair. Now, I have four kids so of course I have some grey's lurking in there. I have dyed my hair in the past but with the short little wirey ones it really doesn't do it much good. I think I will just see how the grey is going to look. I still get mistaken for 16 alot of the times so I am opting to age gracefully at this time. Now, in a few years I might just have to go back to coloring it again.
  • Fallyn said on Dec 03, 2007....
vacant...yeah....i think stress must play a huge part in it.

I doubt if they had 31 yr olds in mind when they made that statement.  Growing old gracefully is what they usually say to us "oldies" to make us less unhappy about the innevitable.

Growing old gracefully beats getting so much surgery done that your face looks a pity. I can think of a few celebs who you just have to pity after their 100th surgery. May as well just put a bag over your head and draw a pic on it.
  • travelr712 said on Dec 04, 2007....
i don't mind the grey in my hair, because if it wasn't for that, i'd be bald! :-) i have always thought that if a woman has grey hair, she is thought of as old, but if it's a man, he's thought of as 'distinguished'.
  • GracefullyGrowing said on Dec 04, 2007....
Travelr - I think society thinks of it that way.  But maybe that's just me.
  • Fallyn said on Dec 04, 2007....

iffy...i COMPLETELY agree. i wasn't talking surgery.........and yes...reading your comment i can picture goldie hawns lips.......

trav....distinguished....i agree....now....as for the grey in my hair making me old???? *frowning, hands on hips*

I started going gray in my late teens, just a few over my right temple.  By my mid 30s I had that gray streak, the skunk streak, in my auburn hair, like GG.  I thought it looked good, but it didn't. It just looked skunky!
My father seemed to go gray overnight after my son was born with Down's Syndrome, so stress has a lot to do with it.  Stress and carbs will age you quickly.
Start using the facial creams and whatnot now Flyn, and definitely stay out of the sun!
That's all you can do, genetics takes care of the rest no matter how hard you work at it.
Don't you love those celebs who are applauded for looking so young at 40, 50, 60?
Who of us wouldn't look great, given the money and time?

Wombie- I try the Harry Potter trick when I drop something. You know, waving my hand over it and saying "up!"
    Hardly ever works.
  • Fallyn said on Dec 04, 2007....
    twy.......what sun? *falling over laughing*
no...i use a daily sunblock........not sure why though. i won't see sun till february.
    not kidding either.
  • Twylarants said on Dec 04, 2007....
Flyn- here's  trick I learned on "Golden Girls"... ...hold a mirror below your face and look down...AHHHH!
Now hold the mirror up in the air and look up....instant face lift!
So remember, once you hit 40....never get on top!
  • Fallyn said on Dec 04, 2007....
    *FALLING OVER LAUGHING*
    i tried that........i didn't look any different.
but i think the last time i tried that i was 20. :P .......so maybe that's why.

huh...i am 51 and full of too much energy....hoping that old age doesn't catch-up to me.... when i turned 40 it was a bad day...when i turned 50...i realized ...there is no turning back now...lol...i stopped worring over my age because it's ....mind over matter!  it does't matter to me any more. **smile** i'm health... somewhat, can out work most youngings, my child-like ways are still alive...*smile*and my love of life is still in me. Sooo, i may not be what i use to be but i'm ok for an old lady!  see ya

I went to a spa the other day to see what they could do about some sun damage on my face.  They did a complete consult and I left there very depressed.  Since when do I need $2000 worth of "stuff" to look young.  According to them I need a complete overhaul complete with botox for my frown line.  I've thought about it and decided to live with my face the way it is.

As for gray hair, I started getting it when I was in my late 20s.  Now I'd say I'm about 1/3 to 1/2 gray and I have that streak on my temple as well.  I do color, but I'm not sure how much longer I intend to keep it up.

Growing older gracefully?  well, I think it's just a matter of accepting changes in your body that you cannot or should not change.
  • Fallyn said on Dec 04, 2007....
    UI..that's ridiculous!!!

there is only one thing i'd like to have done....and it doesn't  involve my face.
i have that HORRIBLE stomach thing from having three ceasarians and i SERIOUSLY hate it.
  • blastfromthepast said on Dec 04, 2007....
IMHO aging is just an illusion.  We obsess with growing old, and do whatever we can to look younger.  I'll do what I can to look 'better', I don't much care how young I look.  Nothing is more revolting than some middle aged woman dressing like a teenager.  But that doesn't mean I can't look great in clothes that compliment me.

  • Fallyn said on Dec 04, 2007....
blast, i totally agree.....dressing too young for your age only makes you look older....

the same as wearing clothes that are too small only makes you look fatter.
  • travelr712 said on Dec 04, 2007....

grace - yes, it's just you! :-P actually, it is society that teaches us that, mostly through commercials, imo.

    velsels

This is me 5 months ago.  Scary, isn't it?  Such a big change in just a few months of each other.  (13 months difference).  It's like once the dam broke it broke, whatever aging I was holding at bay, didn't hold any longer.  I  must confess putting on the weight didn't help.  There is 15 lbs difference, and I have gotten some of that back off.  But, still the difference is staggering.......Where's a plastic surgeon when you need one?.......ha!

  • Fallyn said on Dec 04, 2007....

dee......i don't think you look that different! in fact i think the hairstyle in the second one makes you look younger.

    Your comment:
I am 32 and up until a couple of years ago I was always mistaken for somebody who was 7 or 8 years younger than I actually was. It actually embarrassed me when somebody would think I was 19 and i was 28 in reality. I always wished I looked older..well, unfortunately I got my wish as I am now a 32 year old that looks all of 32!! I have a few gray hairs here and there, but as of right now they blend in fairly nicley with my dark brown hair. The problem with getting older for me is my metabolism has come to a screeching halt!! I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted and stay fairly thin, now I must "calorie count" just to stay under 200 ( I am 5'10). Fallyn, the women that i think of when i think of ageing gracefully are the women that do nothing more than accept aging. The entertainment world has got a few gems in Hellen Mirren, Meryl Streep, and Diane Lane..im sure there are plenty of others that i just cant think of at the time. These women seem to accept the notion that they are gonna age just like everybody else, so they dont seem to be fighting aging as if it is some sort of terrible disease. It's the women who are desperate to say looking 20ish when they are far from 20 that look like fools. Suzanne Sommers, Meg Ryan, and Courtney Love are the women that have went into middle age kicking and screaming and it certainly shows. With all of the "enhancements" they have had, not only do they not look young, they dont even look like they are human at all. I cam across Sommers just the other night on TV and I just had to laugh when seeing her "new look". That face of hers is no longer really hers at all. It is just a symbol of Suzannes desperation to hold off what is perfectly natural and inevitable. If your grey hair really starts to multiply and it bothers you, I could understand getting a bottle of hair dye...just dont get to carried away. There is nothing wrong with being 31, 41 or 61, but there is certainly something wrong with looking like you are from the planet Zolton.

  • travelr712 said on Dec 04, 2007....
lloyd - so what's wrong with the planet zonton? :-)

I would definitely choose plastic surgery, if I could be guanteed of the results, and not suffer any infection, etc.

travelr 712 - She is my 1st granddaughter, and was born on my birthday.  The girl is litterally "my heart".  She has been married now 1 yr. 1/2 , and gave birth to my 1st great-grandson.  She and Alex are a perfect couple, but I would have been just as proud to have had you instead.

A friend of mine who was 22 had beautiful black hair.  She confided in me one day that her hair is actually completely gray and she's been dying it for years.  On one hand, she was embarrassed by it and felt it made her seem older than she was.  But on the other hand she always told me she wanted to live one day confident enough to just let her gray hair grow and not care what other people thought.  Its something I've always remembered about her.

I  think plastic surgery is risky, expecially after what happened to Donda West, Kayne's mother, but I still can see the inclination for it.

I have been having my hair colored since I was about 27. I never miss the appointment and my hairdresser does ownders covering the grey and giving pretty highlights and low-lights. The colors change with "our" mood...it is darker now and typically a little lighter in the summer....it is the only ONE thing that I do for myself that costs money and is JUST for me.
