i'm curious. what different nationalities are you?
if more than one...which do you identify with the most on a cultural level?
which do you wish you knew more about or identified with more?
are there any you are ashamed of? and why?

I also wanted to give you a little cutural note about my mother.  She was born on the way over here from Ireland.  Isn't that really 'cool' ?
  • Fallyn said on Dec 01, 2007....
    that IS really cool!
did they have trouble going through ellis island?
  • rupert7 said on Dec 01, 2007....
My mother was a Scot...pure unconquered Celt.
My Fathers ancestors were the Normans. They were the last people to conquer England in 1066.
So on my mothers side pure Scot and the old mans side...Heinz57 to put it mildly! I have lived most of my life in Australia..an naturalized and consider myself an Aussie.England would be like a foreign country to me.Never been back in 45years!
  • Fallyn said on Dec 01, 2007....
do you remember what nationalities make up that heinz57?
  • rupert7 said on Dec 01, 2007....
Impossible to tell. The Normans intermarried with the populance of England and that populance was the result of constant raiding/invading etc. Saxon,Viking,jute...who the hell knows Fally!!!

Not to mention Roman...1st century or earlier
  • Fallyn said on Dec 01, 2007....

fallyn- My ancestry is from England except for 1/16 Apache. I don't identify with anything but plain old American.
  • crybabylu said on Dec 01, 2007....
1/16 Apache is considered substantial.  So,  you should identify with plain old American.  They were among the very first Americans history records.  My step-dad is 1/16 Cherokee and gets free medical benefits out of Tulsa, OK.  Had, it been 1/8, he would have been entitled to yearly dividends earned from Native American Cherokee holdings from the Tulsa area.  That is where his roots have been traced back to.

Sorry, I forgot to say to whom I was directing my post to.  beyond - I was talking to you.
  • Fallyn said on Dec 01, 2007....
okay.....let's see if i can remember all of mine.

Italian (southern italy near napoli)- my great grandmother on my mothers side was an infant when her family brought her on the ship to ellis island.
    Scotch/Irish .....my great grandfather
Norwiegian on my fathers side.......some of the first emigrants to canada a VERY long time ago.
French/Canadian on my fathers side......somwhere someone french moved to canada.
Chippawa, Cree, Creek, and Crow, native american tribes....... on my fathers side
more Italian (northern Roma-where i get my nose) coming through on my dad's side.
    Acadian.
English, my mothers side via my grandmother, someone on the actual mayflower.
    french mother via grandmother.
    german ditto
    Spanish  ditto.

somewhere in there is portugese, african american, and creole.

    i'm SURE i've missed something....but i can't think of any others.

I know for sure that I'm French (Huguenot ancestry - they fled to escape persecution) on my dad's side, and my maternal grandma seems to have strong ties there too. My grandfather's great-grandfather or so was still in Scotland, and there's a lot of Irish in that part, too.

I identify most strongly with the Irish part (not just the hair :-D). I love all things Celtic, love Irish instruments and folklore, and have ties wrt personal beliefs to the Druids, who tend to claim ancestry in those general areas. I'm also quite fond of the Scottish part, with clans and kilts and bagpipes and all that jazz. :)

I'm half mexican half white of some sort.  I seem to identifiy more with regular american culture it seems, I like taco bell tacos instead of real mexican ones for example hehe.  I know more about my mexican half though family wise, and I used to think everyone ate tortialls on a regular basis too.  I kind of would like to know more about my white half, but I guess it's ok not knowing and dreaming what it might be, sometimes I think England or Ireland just because I like the culture there.  It's fun being in on mexican culture here and in Mexico no one ever suspects that I'd know.
  • lfbno7 said on Dec 01, 2007....
I think you are part Japanese too
  • satyr said on Dec 01, 2007....
I'm kind of a Heinz57, although predominantly English and German.  My father's side goes back to the 17th century in this country immigrating about the time of the Puritans to New England, although his mother was a first generation German.  My mother's side is Scotch and English and traces back to the maritime provinces in the 17th century, although my grandmother on that side was a second generation German.  We also have French and Swiss blood married in.  Not ashamed of any of the bloodlines...might have a blush from a few of the individuals, though.

    ferny...that's awesome.

iffy.....that's really cool in it's own right.....i'm so full of everything that you couldn't really say i'm anything.

ninja....that's really neat though.....the mexican culture is so rich.

satyr. you're a lot like me. and yes. not ashamed of any...but the individuals are quite interesting and may cause some shame.

    Fallyn,

    and all

My pet peeve, I hate when people say my parents, grandparents, etc were irish, scottish, british, german etc, that does not make you one of these, true it  plants your roots in those countries but i am one of those few that believe you should embrace where you where born, not where your family came from (see my last post) I was born and raised in in Ireland, i came to Canada when i was 16, joined the Canadian army, later served in both federal and provincial Canadian governments but i am IRISH (yes I do have Canadian citizenship, but that was required to join the army), my chirldren on the other hand were born in Canada and are Canadian, not irish, basing what you are on where your relitives came from to me at least somehow cheapens what you truly are, just my 2 cents worth

i do not embrace where i was born sorry.
    i simply cannot.

Cussane:    Somehow I highly doubt that the First Nations people would agree with you on that one.  Just my $.98 CDN worth.

yeah --  blast -- you said what i didn't have the nerve to say.  Good for you!  I chose to ignore it, but he has BOASTED at least a couple of times before.  A pointed comment at my nephews  (pookiedookie's ) blog about "his rich Irish" blood. (he didn't say rich, but it was obvious he thought it ).........thanks.....dee

  • lfbno7 said on Dec 02, 2007....
I can't think of a nationality that is more boastful of itself than Irish. Kiss me I'm Irish. The Germans are also very proud of their nationality, as demonstrated by their car and beer commercials that proudly inform of their German abilities.
  • Fallyn said on Dec 02, 2007....
i don't think it's just irish or german........i can't really think of any nationality that wishes itself wiped off the face of the earth........this very things has caused wars all over the world!

Does third person stories bother you?
Do you not get a sense of caring for the character if they're unnamed and you don't get the classic description learning about the character, and instead have them thrown into the situation?...
