My 12 year old son wants a Nintendo Wii for Christmas.

Try to find one.

They retail for 249.00.
They're going on eBay for twice that.....and higher.

You can't find them in stores.  I've spent every free moment this week going from Walmart to Toyr R Us to GameStop to Target to Best Buy to Circuit City.

I'm on 3 smaller store waiting lists.....

My sister just spent close to $600 buying one online-  If you subtract the extra Mario game, she overpaid by about $300.  On principle, I won't do that ---

I swear I'm not going to do that....

I guess that means that next week, every free moment I'll be back to visiting all the same stores again.

To top it off, my oldest is wanting one of those 80 GB Zunes.

They're out of stock everywhere too.

They sure don't make it easy to Christmas shop.

This is where lovingly crafted gift certificates come in handy. In the past (think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Cabbage Patch and American Girl dolls) when this kin d of manufactured shortage has been an issue, we've resorted to handwritten notes promising the desired item at a later date when they become readily available. Usually we included an accessory like a game or a doll's outfit to show that we're serious about the promise - and we always kept the promise. Christmas shouldn't be about driving yourself crazy to satisfy a particular material want - and someone who bakes a gazillion cookies for others ought to remember this without batting an eye ;) - and our children need to learn this lesson from personal experience.

    Yes, I'm smacking you upside the head, friend, but here's a hug 'cause I know how much it hurts to search so hard to please a child.  {{SL}}

secret- We went through that with the boys. On a couple of occasions we got their second choice and promised first choice on their birthday which for both is shortly after Christmas. They were fine with that. If you can't find these, is that an option? I wouldn't pay double either, by the way.

Hey SL haha, they don't make anything easy when you are a Mom, this is just another thing to add to that long list of not easy things Mom's somehow pull out of their hats.

Good luck with it, not the end of the world if you can't find it at a reasonalbe price. After all, we've made Christmas way too much about things.

I don't even want to go there, yet, SL.  I haven't even gotten lists from all the kids on what they want - although son wants a X-Box360.  Wife braved Black Friday for the first time ever with hopes of finding him one, but alas, they were sold out as well.  I'll keep my eyes open around here and see if I can help you snag one.  Good luck!

Wasn't that what everyone was standing in lines for last year? This new game? Oh, boy, wait until after xmas, then go get your deal!  No way would I pay twice the amount.

Unfortunately, anyone who wanted to give a Wii for Christmas needed to purchase them in August or September.  It's pretty much the same for the Zune.  Would your daughter accept an iPod instead of the Zune?

MMI:  most of the gifts i buy are for the kids- mine and my nieces and nephews.
i get a few things for my husband - sneakers ...he always needs those.  and i'll do a stocking with his favorite treats.  I buy a gift for my mom and for my mother in law, but those are the only major ones i do for adults.

i'm behind on my shopping i guess.

LJ;  yesssssssssss i already had the chat with my son about the possibility i wasn't gonna find the Wii.....I'll search for the games on his list (there are 3), and if i don't get lucky, i'll just do one of those crafty gift certs.  and give him the games so he knows one is coming eventually.

cookies?  lol....i should have started baking this weekend!  i'm just doing the decorating though.  don't remind me about the cookies just yet, k?

beyond:  today i bought him a flowboard.  He's into skateboarding, and i thought this board looked like alot of fun.  i was worried because the Wii was all that was on his list (other than Wii games!).....

i hope i find one still, although i don't know how much time i'm going to have over the coming weeks to chase one down.....

mamie:  i think the shortages are everywhere-  otherwise i'd be able to purchase one online.  i didn't start looking until 2 weeks before thanksgiving......big mistake!
hope you had fun at the cheering competition today!

mobil:  i already decided i wasn't going to buy one overpriced just to get one--
so i guess i'll just cross my fingers and do a bunch of running in and out of stores over the next few weeks.  yes, one more thing!

satyr:  i've seen the xbox 360.  last year that one was the one that was impossible to find!  i had actually asked my son if he wanted that instead, but he seems to have his mind set on the Wii...

good luck in your search for xbox!

quiet:  it was xbox last year - i think anyway.........
i'm not going to pay double just to get it, so either i'll have good luck or we'll get it after Christmas.  it is disappointing though, to not be able to get the main item on your child's list....

wreck:  i wish i knew back in august or september!!!
i don't ask them to do their lists until after Halloween.
i love Christmas, but i'm not one who thinks about it in the summer....

i've asked her about the ipod.  i actually like them better myself, and she had an ipod when they first came out...

i'm not done looking for the zune yet, but there are plenty of ipods, so that's my fallback for her.

My favorite Christmas song, I chose Olivia for several reasons. One she's pretty haha, but I liked her rendition even better than Bing's. Anyway, Merry Christmas SL. It is a wonderful life !!

  • secretlife said on Jan 01, 2008....
i knew that Bruce Springsteen had recorded a version of this song-  i looked that up on yahoo, and found out that the original song title wasn't Buffalo Gal- it was Lubly Fan.  i looked that up in Wikipedia, and found out this song was an old (1844) minstrel song....
anyway, then i looked up lubly fan in youtube, and just kept clicking til i found something i liked.

    happy new year.
    ilum!
