I was just checking up on my Google Page Rank, Alexa score, and Technorati rating. Have you ever done that? Do you really care? Which others have you checked up on or found useful?

By the way, it does not have to be a soulcast blog!

sw: hi...good point. i had the same problem once. There are downloads to get, often in browser form or as add-ons or widgets to add to blog templates, etc.

don't care to.  If I was doing it for ratings then maybe I would

U-I: hi there...interesting. As long as you get comments to your posts, all's well, right?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Nov 30, 2007....
yep! and in fact if I only get comments now and then the therapy I get in return for writing is worth having

I know exactly where to look. I'm in the biz that cares about PR. I rank a 3 on my blog. Not bad. SC as a site ranks 5. SW ranks a 4, as one of the most prolific writers on the site. Not bad. But the PR comes from inbound links to your blog...rather than just volume and frequency of content, although that helps.

Few rank higher than 7 unless they are a major search engine like google, Yahoo, etc... then they rank 10.

I'm working to get my PR up to a 6, but frankly, I'm kind of surprised I rank a 3. I don't post all that often, and I wouldn't expect that many people linking to my blog.

I'd like to know where I stand how do I find out? Share people. Although this is like therapy this computer idiot likes to learn new things.

Download Google's toolbar. It shows yours and everyone else's page rank. PageRank isn't the most important thing about what makes a site or blog perform well in the SERPs, but it's an indicator.

CW, HH, everyone: no big deal....all you had to do was ask: check your PR here. Let me know where/what you rank?

The other joints require you to download or install JAVA script: not possible on SC.

I'll be honest, I have no idea what a Google Page Rank, Alexa score, and Technorati rating is.
  • PassionTraveler said on Dec 04, 2007....
CryBabylu, its' a way for the search engines to qualify and quantify your content.

Search Engines (SEs) see it their responsibility to be gatekeepers of the Internet. They feel that if a searcher looks for something specific, they should find as close a match as intended. SEs also make the assumption that we are all looking for useful information, rather than just mere advertisements and promotions, unless of course you are looking for a specific retail product or service. But even then, the typical buyer's mentality is research, research, research, first, then buy.

So, they had to devise a way to rank the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) as well as individual sites so that searchers would find at the top of the natural (unpaid) list the most relative content they were seeking. Since there are SOOO many sites, blogs, etc... it would be impossible to police it manually. Those PageRank, Alexa, etcetera ratings are a part, but not the total component, of a site or blog ranking high in the natural SERPs.

So, through a complex mathematical and programming algorithm kept secret from the general public to prevent abuse, they send spiders (online robots) to look at each site, blog, news item, etc on the WWW and look for things like high quality content rich with keywords and a site that constantly adds new informative content on a regular and consistent basis. That's why blogs do so well in the SERPs. We bloggers are consistently posting interesting and informative, or at least entertaining content.

The algorithm changes periodically to adjust to new technology; the searcher's changing needs and search trends; and to combat savvy and often unethical Webmasters who figure out ways to artificially boost the natural results... in a sense those trying to figure out the secret algorithm.

Additionally, they look for "referrals" from other credible sites to your site or blog. If someone they think is a good egg sends people via links to your site, they figure it's also a good site and will rank you higher the more "referrals" or links you get from other high quality sites. This of course has cropped up an entire industry of paid links, which SEs very much abhor and can penalize both the sellers and buyers of such links. They say they can tell if it's a genuine "referral" vs. a paid link.

Other things factor in as well, like the age of the site/blog, whether or not it's a dot.org, dot.net, dot.edu, dot.gov, dot.mil, or dot.com. Sites that are perceived to be of greater credibility -- like dot.org, dot.edu, dot.gov -- are automatically ranked higher than .coms or .nets as a rule, but not necessarily all the time.

Also the age of the site is important. If you are a fly-by-night blogger, or business, and are online one week and off the next, you are really of no value to their searchers who are looking for reliability in their information. Ergo, the longer a site has been up, another point toward the rankings, SERPs, etc.

Hope that helps you better understand how the Search Engines deliver the results you find when typing in a keyword. :)

passion - very informative but did you say how to check it?

thank you, i don't know how I missed them both....probably need new glasses I'm having probems proofreading my own posts too, and that isn't a good thinng, huh?  Hey can I ask you a different question.  How do you spell check on  these?

I am getting tire of working with my dictionary.  Is there a way of checking spelling while posting?  It is definitely not under tools.  Or will I find it under Google toolbar also?

  • PassionTraveler said on Dec 04, 2007....
In Soul Cast, when you type, it will underline in red what it thinks are misspelled words. simply right click on the word with your mouse, and it should give you a corrected spelling. Click the correction and it will automatically replace the misspelled with the corrected.

:) Or, you could just compose in something like Microsoft Word that has an auto spell check feature and just past the corrected text into SC.

I am constantly doing this, but that means one is busy going back and forth.

As far as on SC anything having a  red line under it that SC thinks is mispelled, then they must be as bad a speller as I am, because it has never happened

    but thanks...................dee

Hey passion - I keyed in SERP on my google bar, and it said   Supplemental Executive Retirement Plan (SERP) , but of course, it did say search engines too, (SE,), so I will go back and see what I can find out.  But I did do what you said, and downloaded the google toolbar.  Thanks.

crybabylu: don't worry, you're not missing any great deal with the ranking thing, unless you want to make some money off of it.

PT: no real interest in SEO. Just felt a bit bad that Google slashed the PR on one of my other blogs because they felt I was part of a link farm or something. I hope they realize their mistake soon. thanks for asking.

  • PassionTraveler said on Dec 12, 2007....
That buzz went like wildfire through my industry as you can guess. My company's PR 6 went to a PR4. What we've determined is the new 4 is the old 6. They rearranged everyone. Yahoo.com used to be a 10. they are now an 8 or 9.

    Just Google being ornery.
