i had an interview for a position yesterday that i'm not crazy about. the specifics of why aren't terribly relevant.

i arrived about 30 mins early, which is always my intention with interviews. often, there's paperwork or the like that requires completion and getting there early gives me the opportunity to get that done quickly: i can complete it and not be in the office longer than necessary that way.

but that isn't how they do things there...

i met with the hiring manager and we chatted for a while about how my experience make me a good candidate for the position. that conversation seemed to go rather well.

but for this particular position, there's a...well, i'll call it a questionnaire in three parts, asking general demographic information for employment law compliance, an analytical section to see how well you process information, and lastly a section that asks about your experience.

in total, this questionnaire consisted of perhaps 240 questions.

two hundred and forty!

suffice it to say that my brain was awfully soft afterwards...

after the questionnaire there was the paperwork. holy crap but was there a lot! they must have tons of people in their legal department, b/c i kid you not, to work there you have to submit to an awful lot of investigation: criminal history, industry-specific inquiries and of course, waivers for drug testing. i think that stuff took me around 30 minutes to complete. there had to be around 75-100 pages, no exaggeration.

so i arrived at noon and left the building at 3:50, which was when i called my wife to let her know i was done.

i'm going to be exceedingly irritated if this doesn't result in a second interview...

shit, i forgot to write my thank you letter yesterday. gonna have to do that today...

and actually, this gives me an idea for a poll...but i'll make that a separate blog entry.

wow, that's intense.  I have met very few employers that collect more than a generic 1-2 page form and a resume.  Of course, most of my positions are not technically white collar.

u-i: but here's the thing, i haven't seen a lot of questionnaires, either--and this one was nuts!

queen: yeah, i know! i was like "seriously, why not just frigging strap me into a lie detector or something"! i don't recall what 200 was, probably something about "when you worked in [industry], how many years did you spend as [role]" or something like that. it was pretty darned exhaustive! :>

Heh, I didn't mean to just drop in and say something inane -- I just didn't have much else to say.

I remember my last interview for my current job. It was intense, but your experience wasn't even in the same league!
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 30, 2007....
dude, you are never inane. capische?

  • TinSoldier said on Nov 30, 2007....
    Okay, okay.

What I meant was, I saw the two interview posts and I wanted to say something but all I could come up with were short shout outs.

Until you replied to them anyway.

    Better?

    :p
  • silverwhisper said on Nov 30, 2007....
dude, don't play the "self-deprecating burst of honesty that i parlay into something funny" game with me. i know those games, every rule, every loophole, man.

you leave me no choice but to...
