The Raven's Spiral was a confection of black gingerbread, like a wedding cake for the dead. Signs along the sides hinted at dark arts performed inside, and the doorway was hidden in a niche so deep that it was velvety black, and the doorknob was shaped......

The Winterbourne house was a place of gently threadbare carpets on cherrywood floors, and deep cushy sofas covered with tapestry pillows, and Colonial sideboards piled with old pewter, and ivy in terracotta pots drifting across dusty window ledges......

"Apollo," Quin said.
"Apollo whom?"
"Apollo Helios."...
